FC Dallas has a lot of roster issues to sort out as offseason begins

Who stays, and who goes will be the big question on everyone’s mind.

The offseason is in full effect now for FC Dallas as players return to Frisco after a couple weeks off to begin the final bit of training for 2017. It seems silly to some that the team would train after the season is over but this is merely how things work as players begin their exit interviews on the year before the club makes their finally call on who will or will not return.

The depth of this team looked really good going into 2017 but as we begin to exit the year, we have to take an honest look at what we thought would be a strength of the team.

Big D Soccer has been working hard to secure information on which player contracts are expiring at the end of 2017, which players have contract extensions to be exercised and who will most certainly be back in 2018.

In years past the expiring contract list has been pretty small given how Fernando Clavijo and Oscar Pareja have operated. But based on our sources, this year’s group of players who’s contracts are set to expire is a lot bigger.

According to our sources, eight FC Dallas players have expiring contracts including veterans Maynor Figueroa, Chris Seitz, Javier Morales, Roland Lamah, Maxi Urruti and Atiba Harris. The group also includes a pair of Homegrown players in Aaron Guillen and Coy Craft.

The group of players up for contract extensions include: Walker Hume, Tesho Akindele, Reggie Cannon, Jesus Ferreira, Carlos Gruezo, Jacori Hayes, Ryan Hollingshead, Paxton Pomykal, Bryan Reynolds, Victor Ulloa and Walker Zimmerman.

Then you have two players who are currently on loan: Hernan Grana and Carlos Cermeno.

Everyone else is at least locked in though 2018 at this point.

Yes, that seems like an awful lot of players but it is pretty common to have a long list of players that will get contract extensions in MLS. The league loves to dish out deals that are one year long with team options for the second and third years.

We plan to dive into a series for each of these players on the list and evaluate whether or not we want them back in the coming days.

In the meantime, what do you all make of the possible changes this offseason to this roster? Any player you really don’t want to see back?
