The start of a two game series with C.D. Suchitepéquez begins tonight for FC Dallas. The prize is winning Group H in CONCACAF Champions League play.
Both teams currently sit at four points in group play after two games -- all against eliminated Salvadoran side Real Estelí, who have already played all four of their fixtures.
Suchitepéquez got into this year's group stage by winning Guatemala's 2016 Clausura Championship, qualifying them for their first CCL under the tournament's current format. Suchitepéquez have never faced an MLS opponent -- at home or away -- in CONCACAF play.
FC Dallas notes:
Injury update. Just Zach Loyd.
At home in CCL play. FC Dallas have never lost at home to a Central American opponent in CCL play, with a 2-0-1 record between the 2011-12 tournament and this edition.
Key player for FCD: Carlos Ruiz. Yep, I’m calling it, Ruiz gets his first start in his return to the club against a team he should be fairly familiar with. He spent the last two years in Guatemala with Municipal where he scored 46 goals. If anything, it would be great to see him play but to get some goals against an old foe would be pretty nice too.
Biggest question: How many guys will be preserved for Saturday night against LA?
Here we go again, another week with a lot of games. I get the sense that the priority will still be to get a result in this one but it may come with a fairly reserve-heavy squad. If anything I am all for giving Mauro Diaz, Maxi Urruit and someone like Walker Zimmerman a rest for Saturday’s big game against LA.
