MLS 24 Under 24: Walker Zimmerman lands at No. 11

Its been a banner year for the Georgia native.

MLS: Portland Timbers at FC Dallas Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

As they do every year now, is unveiling their annual top 24 players under the age of 24 list this week. So far the list has gone through players 16-24 without any FC Dallas flavor. That all changed today as they broke out numbers 11-15 and wouldn’t you know it sitting at number 11 was our own Walker Zimmerman.

We all know Zimmerman’s rise this season. It took a couple years to get us to this point with him as he battled injuries in his first couple of seasons before coming along more in 2015. And who can forget that penalty kick he scored in the playoffs last year against Seattle.

Anyways, this year has really been something else out of Zimmerman has he has found himself to be a constant starter on the back line with Matt Hedges. He’s appeared in 26 games and playing the full 90 in all of them while scoring three goals.

My favorite part of these list is seeing what scouts from around the league have to say about each player. The comments on Zimmerman were as good as I would have hoped for:

“On the attacking side, he’s one of the best aerial threats in the league when it comes to attacking corners and wider free kicks.”

“You can see the confidence he exudes on the field. For younger players to have that, that’s a great sign for a center back. Those qualities – size, strength, vocal, confident, disciplined – that’s what you want out of a center back, and I think he’ll only improve in that position.”

The rest of the list will be unveiled over the rest of the week. FC Dallas should see a couple more players make the top 10 with the likes of Kellyn Acosta and Carlos Gruezo still waiting to see their names announced. Acosta was #14 last year on the list, so the feeling is that he’ll at least move up given his level of play in 2016.
