It certainly wasn’t pretty but FC Dallas picked up a win in their first CONCACAF Champions League game since 2011 as they downed Real Esteli 2-1.
FC Dallas got a first half goal from Michael Barrios and then a late game-winner from defender Maynor Figueroa on the way to picking up three points.
Barrios almost had a goal 20 minutes into the match as he pushed up the field on a counter attack. He made one move by a defender before putting in a low and hard shot past the Real Esteli keeper. Unfortunately the Colombian’s shot would rattle off the post and back into play.
FC Dallas kept with it on the attack and it was Barrios in the 44th minute that found the back of the net for good. Atiba Harris won the ball on the pack post where he found Barrios but a Real Esteli defender cleared the ball out only as far as to Ryan Hollingshead. The California native made a clever move past a defender and then crossed the ball back across the goal where Barrios was waiting to put it home into the back of the net.
Real Esteli tied things up shortly after halftime though in the 48th minute. Halftime when substitute Juan Berdun chased down a long pass near the end line. He dribbled towards Jesse Gonzalez and then struck a hard ball that went past the Dallas Homegrown.
FC Dallas got the lead back late in this one in the 84th minute. Substitute Mauro Rosales received a pass on the right flank. His pass to Maximiliano Urruti got deflected along the way and landed with Figueroa. The Honduran pounded a ball high into the goal and out of reach for the Real Esteli keeper.
FC Dallas returns to action next week as they travel to Los Angeles for the semifinal round of the US Open Cup against the LA Galaxy before returning home for a league game against Sporting KC.
