General thoughts on the match…

In the second half, we proved one more time that our character is always there, in spite of the long trips we have had in the last three weeks. The boys did a terrific job again, getting important points away against a rival that did very good things in the first half. Houston did very well, creating options and complicating things for us, especially on the right side. They clogged up a lot of things for us and had options to score themselves, on the right side. We did not have any answers in the first 20-25 minutes. They deserved to win the half.

In the second half, I thought it was a great response from our players. The adjustments they made on the field, picking up the tempo and believing we could win the game. They were very good. We are proud. We are happy. The three points are well deserved.

What was the biggest difference between the first and second half?

The players’ response… I saw them pick up the tempo. I saw them with more intensity. I saw them adjusting to the game and finding answers by themselves. They did a good job. In the first half, I thought we looked flat but in the second they were making the runs we wanted. In the second half, our forwards gave Mauro Rosales and Mauro Diaz options in-behind. We looked more dangerous. That did not happen much in the first half.

On losing the Texas Derby but getting closer to winning the Supporters Shield…

We have been facing three tournaments in the last few weeks but [the Texas Derby] trophy is important for our fans. We want to win the rivalry too. We respect Houston a lot. It has been difficult to get results against them this season. The first match we played against them this season… They scored five goals. They deserved it but along the season, we found answers.

On the play of Michael Barrios…

He has been crucial in our results, not just by scoring. He is a team player. He comes and works. He can come in at any time and adjust to the variations, like he did tonight. We change him from one side to the other and he adjusts well. He can change from the flank to up top. He was a difference-maker tonight, for sure.

General thoughts on the match…

Credit Houston for the first half they played. They had us pinned back in the first half. We were able to come out with a lot more energy in the second half. We showed that we wanted it. I thought that we were the better team and deserved to win.

On coming on as a substitute…

If you’re a sub, you obviously did not play the first half. You’re feeling fresh. I wanted to kind of raise the level of the team. I want to start but when you are the sub, you want to come out right away and show the coach that you can play well.

On getting contributions from several different players this week…

That was huge. Tonight Mikey [Barrios] scored two goals. After he scored his first goal, he was not tired anymore. You could see right after that, he was buzzing around the field. He helped to raise everyone else’s level. For him, it was huge. For the team, it is a huge win against our rivals. We’re all happy.

On losing the Texas Derby…

I’d rather be winning the Supporters Shield race.
