Goal Breakdown: Taking a second look at Kellyn Acosta’s goal against Vancouver

Acosta’s second goal of the season was a great team play.

FC Dallas wore down the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday afternoon in their 2-0 win. It took 55 minutes to get a goal but when it did it was a strong team effort that lead to Kellyn Acosta’s second goal of the season.

FCD broke down the Whitecaps on the left side of the pitch with Maynor Figueroa getting up into the attack. He and Ryan Hollingshead had a nice give-and-go before the veteran fullback laid the ball back to Mauro Diaz. As always, the Argentine wisely picked out someone up top, in this case Michael Barrios who was making a run at the top of the penalty box. Barrios did well enough with the pass from Diaz before putting just enough on a pass to Acosta, who then one-timed it into the back of the net.

That little bit of space that Barrios created in this play is huge. He gets enough separation from Kendall Waston to break Acosta free into the penalty box.

Acosta was also wise enough to not take any extra touches here on this one and just hammer it into the goal. I think a year ago he would have over thought this play and wouldn’t have one-timed it past David Ousted.

The goal was the game-winner on Sunday and was also Diaz’s 10th assist on the season, matching his career high from a year ago.
