FC Dallas on Campus: Ten academy players to watch in 2016

Keeping up with the national title winners in college will be fun.

We talk about the future of FC Dallas on here a lot when it comes to the academy players. Each fall we do our best here at Big D Soccer to track those FCD academy players in college to let you all know how they are doing.

Here are ten players we’re keeping a close eye on this season (I’m sure we’ll add more to this list as the season rolls on).

Eddie Munjoma - defender - SMU

SMU has a couple good FCD guys coming their way this fall, including Munjoma, a impact type player in the defense.

Phillip Ponder - defender - SMU

The Mustangs gobbled up a couple U-18 guys for this fall, including this center back. Ponder started 26 of 28 games for FCD last season and will look to insert himself in a crowded Mustang defense.

Reggie Cannon - defender - UCLA

Cannon becomes the first FCD Academy alumni to play at UCLA this fall. Having also appeared for the youth national team, look for Cannon to compete for minutes early on this season for the Bruins.

Hector Montalvo - defender - Grand Canyon University

Former FCD boss Schellas Hyndman snagged him arguably one of the best center backs that the academy has ever produced. Montalvo is looking to compete on the national level for the U-20s as they look to make a World Cup next year.

Kris Reaves - defender - Portland University

Reaves enjoyed a couple solid seasons with Wake Forrest but had opted to transfer for his junior season to Portland. Reaves has spent plenty of time in the past training with the Under-20 and Under-18 National Teams. He helped Wake Forrest earn an ACC regular season championship and reach the NCAA Elite Eight last fall.

Nicolas Rochowski - defender - New Mexico

Rochowski heads into his senior season with the Lobos after being their ironman last season, playing every single minute. He was New Mexico’s defensive MVP in 2015 as well and continues to be an improving player.

Toshiki Yasuda - midfielder - SMU

Yasuda scored 10 goals for the academy last year in the run to a national title. How he factors into the Mustang’s offense will be interesting to see develop this season.

Patrick Khouri - midfield - New Mexico

The redshirt sophomore is looking to build on a strong redshirt freshman campaign that saw him start all 18 games for the Lobos.

Bobby Edet - forward - Furman University

We’ve been tracking Edet for a few years now on this site. As he enters his senior season, Edet is looking to guide Furman to another Southern Conference championship.

Giovanni Montesdeoca - forward - University of North Carolina

Anytime you get an academy player to a school like UNC, it means he’s probably a special talent. Montesdeoca is a big, strong target forward that will be worth keeping an eye on in his freshman year this fall. He certainly has the tools to be someone the club could sign down the road.
