The annual Brimstone Cup match is here and for the first time in a couple seasons, it is back in Frisco. FC Dallas welcomes the Chicago Fire to town for the first time since the 2013 season.
Each team is coming off a Wednesday night match that saw different results. Chicago picked up a win at home over Sporting KC, while FC Dallas used a fairly reserve-heavy roster in a blowout loss at Seattle.
FC Dallas notes:
Injury update. The only injury is still with Zach Loyd. No new progress on where he is at in the concussion protocols.
Scoring first. Since last season, FC Dallas has a 24-1-2 record when scoring first. Dallas’ only loss was a 2‐1 defeat to the LA Galaxy on Aug. 15 (Dallas’ last home loss).
Attacking minded. According to the club’s game notes, FCD’s offense ranks second in MLS in goals (31), second in shots on goal (100) and first in corner kicks (108).
Key player for FCD: Mauro Diaz. It should be no secret that this team is far better with Diaz out on the field pulling the strings in the attack. On Wednesday night, the attack never really got going due in part to the early red card but also because the team never got in sync with one another on the field. As long as Diaz is there to pull the strings, the attack will run all over Chicago.
Biggest question: How does this team respond after Wednesday night?
The blowout losses on the road have been pretty bad this year to say the least but the club has done a decent job for the most part in responding to them. I kind of take Wednesday night’s game with a grain of salt considering the large number of key players sitting it out or coming off the bench. Given that this one is at home, fans should feel confident that unbeaten run at Toyota Stadium gets extended.
