MLS Fantasy Fisticuffs: Round 16

Should you swoop for NYCFC and NE Revs players for their DGW?

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Fantasy Fisticuffs pits angry combatants head-to-head in an MLS Fantasy soccer showdown. Each week, Phil and Ben argue over which players will perform. The stakes are high. The competitor whose team scores the fewer amount of points through Round 27 (September 3rd) will have to endure two laps of shaming around the Toyota Stadium concourse, Cersei Lannister style (though probably not nude)! Join our league using the code 35-1619 to follow along.

Solo effort from Phil this week. Ben scored 87 points last round, for a total of 1277. I only scored 75 to get to 1210 points. Congratulations to my buddy Nick Moss and his team "Garden of EdenHazard," who put up 102 points last round for the Big D Soccer League weekly high score! This guy rocks!

Round 15 Review

Round 15 was a Double Game Week of disappointment. Out of the DGW teams - New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union, LA Galaxy, and Real Salt Lake - only three players made the Dream Team. And two out of the three were surprising players that few people own, Philly's Roland Alberg (M-$8.4) and NYRB's Gideon Baah (D-$8.2).

Would I suggest following the points to get breakout player Roland Alberg? No, he has a Round 18 bye. The third DGW Dream Team player was LA's goalie, Brian Rowe (G-$4.8), who has a firm hold on LA's starting spot for less than a starting goalie price, but also has a Round 18 bye.

Diego Valeri (M-$11.0) continues to be a must-own player. He usually provides assists and bonus points, but this week he added two goals!

Round 16

I'm not going to give up on DGWs yet, and look to get players who are less likely to be rotated. This week, New York City FC and New England Revolution have two games.

David Villa (F-$12.0) and Lee Nguyen (M-$11.8) are the obvious pickups. It should be safe to go with either Bobby Shuttleworth (G-$5.6) or Josh Saunders (G-$4.9) in goal. Ronald Matarrita (D-$7.9) leads the NYCFC defense with 71 points, but was rotated during NYCFC's Round 11 DGW.

New England has been rotating players all year, so I'm not comfortable picking any of their field players other than Nguyen. But NYCFC has a couple established starters that are good values. Jack Harrison (M-$5.6) has locked down the RW spot and has scored 8, 5, and 4 points in the last three games. RJ Allen (D-$5.6) is an inexpensive way into the NYCFC backline.

Final Thought

Watch out! Both DGW teams have a Round 18 bye, so be sure that you will have 11 starters in two weeks.

Remember how I screwed up and didn't use my Wildcard? Well, it's now or never if you haven't used your WC. I'm stocking up on NYCFC players with my WC and will still be ready for R18.
