Fantasy Fisticuffs pits angry combatants head-to-head in an MLS Fantasy soccer showdown. Each week, Phil and Ben argue over which players will perform. The stakes are high. The competitor whose team scores the fewer amount of points through Round 27 (September 3rd) will have to endure two laps of shaming around the Toyota Stadium concourse, Cersei Lannister style (though probably not nude)! Join our league using the code 35-1619 to follow along. After 12 rounds, Ben is in front 1087-1033.
Where was Phil?
This week we're flipping the script and it's a Phil solo effort.
I'm back. Where was I? Sulking. In Round 9, I made a HUGE mistake.
I made 11 transfers and totally intended to use my Wildcard. Did I ever actually click "Play Wildcard." Well, no. You see, there was this popup that I thought said something about the Wildcard being played automatically after so many transfers. Obviously, I misread it. I took a -44. You kidding me?
I've been trying to get it corrected, but they tell me there's no hope. He's dead, Jim. I'm an engineer, not a doctor! And now I have to revive my fantasy hopes. I guess I'll use my Wildcard in Round 15, or something.
Luckily, I'm still in 32nd place! I could be in 5th, but hey, 32nd ain't bad. My goal was top 100, so I'll take it. I just have to put this debacle behind me and focus on the future.
Round 12 Review
A lot of people captained Kaka (M-$11.0), including my fantasy foe Ben, who was a disappointment because of his unexpected absence in the second game of Orlando City's DGW due to a Copa America Centenario fill-in call-up. If you were bold and went with Cyle Larin (F-$9.4), who scored 12 points, congratulations!
Other popular picks were Philadelphia Union guys. I went with CJ Sapong (F-$8.2) and he dropped a deuce and a tres, which is not what you want in a captain. Tranquillo Barnetta (M-$8.1) was and still is a smart play because he takes set pieces. Chris Pontius (M-$7.2) scored a cool nine points and is dependent on goals and assists, so he's hit or miss.
The New York Red Bulls are the hottest team in MLS right now. Sacha Kljestan (M-$12.0) scored 11 points and Bradley Wright-Phillips (F-$11.1) bagged a hat trick and scored 17 points! If you have them in your lineup and can afford it, try to keep them on your bench over this bye week.
Play who ya got! With eight teams on bye, it can be a struggle just to get a full lineup. It's usually better to take -4s to get a player who plays instead of a zero.
The ideal goalie to have through the Round 19 Unlimited Transfer Week is Nick Rimando ($6.2). With Adam Kwarasey still out, Jake Gleeson ($4.4) is still the best budget play.
Watch out! Nuno Andre Coelho ($7.9) is "probably out" with a hamstring strain. I suggest Walker Zimmerman (D-$6.4), Keegan Rosenberry (D-$5.9), and Daniel Steres (D-$5.1). Axel Sjoberg (D-$5.9) is cheap enough that you can stash him on your bench for this bye.
At midfield, Diego Valeri (M-$10.8) and Mauro Diaz (M-$10.9) are still the guys to own. Federico Higuain (M-$10.7) has been quietly good this year and is an interesting differential. Need a cheaper option than these studs? Try Lamar Neagle (M-$7.8) or one of the Philly guys, Barnetta (M-$8.1) or Pontius (M-$7.2).
Drop Sebastian Giovinco (F-$12.7) and pick up David Villa (F-$11.7). Giovani Dos Santos (F-$11.4) is the most transferred-in player this week. Joao Plata (F-$9.5) is a good pick up and if you need a budget option, look to Sapong (F-$8.2) and Mike Magee (F-$7.3).
Who to Captain?
Valeri - Leads all players in Bonus Points and is the most owned player among the top 100 managers
Diaz - Could explode against a weak Dynamo team in the Texas Derby
Villa - Leads the league in goals and shots, so there's always a chance for massive points
Hasta la vista
