It is game day again as FC Dallas returns home for the first time in nearly a month as they host the defending MLS Cup champions Portland Timbers.
Both teams are coming into this game off losses, as FCD has lost three straight games by a 8-0 scoreline. FC Dallas returns to Toyota Stadium for the first time in 24 days – its longest stretch of road games this season. The team won its last match at home, 2‐1, against Sporting Kansas City on April 17. Despite its recent losing streak on the road, Dallas is enjoying its fifth‐longest regular season home unbeaten streak in franchise history (8‐0‐2).
FC Dallas notes:
Lots of shots. According to the club's game notes, Dallas’ offense ranks second in shots (14.6 per game) and third in shots on goal (5.18 per game) while Portland ranks eighth (13.4 per game) and 13th (4.3 per game).
Last time against Portland. A month ago, these two teams squared off in Portland. Maxi Urruti picked the pocket of Portland midfielder Jack Jewsbury, twice, helping give Dallas a 3‐0 cushion by the 29th minute in the team’s first‐ever win at Providence Park.
Injury update. Matt Hedges has been missing for the last few games as he last played in Portland a month ago before going down with a torn meniscus. He is close to returning however, ahead of schedule, which was originally labeled as four-to-six weeks.
Key player for FCD: Maxi Urruti. The Argentine striker has been ice cold in terms of scoring for the last five games. If he doesn't get on the board tonight, it could smell doom for the FC Dallas attack.
Biggest question: Will FCD return to their old selves back at home?
FCD has been stellar at home but these last three weeks have definitely been troubling. I think getting a goal early will certainly help go a long way as the team needs confidence in front of goal again. But the defense also has to step up against a Portland attack that does do well at finding their way to goal.
