FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz
On being named Man of the Match…
It’s good. For us, we knew they were a good squad. They tested us tonight. We have a bend but do not break mentality. We were a little fortunate on our goal but we were pressing for a lot of the night. Good for Tesho [Akindele], getting on the score sheet. Look, we want to win at home. That is always our mentality. We left some points out there tonight but at the same time, we understand how good of a team Columbus is. Anytime you can ground out points is good. One point is a lot better than zero. We battled hard and we were a little fortunate but you have to create your own luck.
On making five saves…
We know they are a big squad. They have a lot of big boys. Credit to them, they made a near post run and the serve was in a good spot. We reacted well though. They are a team that likes to keep possession of the ball but the minute we made them play long, we started to win a couple second balls and that was good. It’s never an easy task against a team that was in the final last season.
FC Dallas midfielder Kellyn Acosta
On making the first start of his career as an attacking midfielder…
It’s a kind of different feel for me. I’ve never been that far up on the field. It’s something I’m not too familiar with. I like to get forward it’s hard for me to get into the right spots and find the ball. I kind of tried to mimic Mauro [Diaz] but I mean he’s a magician. It’s hard to play his game. It was also difficult in the defensive aspect. They were good playing out of the back. We tried to manage that as best as we could. In the second half, we got it figured out. They started playing the ball long, which it helped us, we were good in the air in the back and pretty solid defensively. As the game went on, we started doing better but in the first half, we gave up that early goal. It was tough for us to get back in the game. Finally, in the second half, the game opened up and we used that to our advantage to keep going.
On defensive set pieces…
We were prepared. We just had to be more careful. They’re good in the air. It was just a little lack of concentration. The guy just got in front, I’m not sure who it was, but he just got in front and we weren’t able to win the header. That little aspect… Any team can capitalize just like that. We need to be more mindful of that.
On the play of Chris Seitz…
He was huge today. He kept us in the game for sure, I mean Jesse’s [Gonzalez] been in there, but last game, he had important saves as well… One on a penalty kick… This game he was incredible, kept us in the game, kept us alive and gave us hope. Organizing the back line, he was tremendous. I hope we get more games like that out of him, but I also want to relieve the pressure and not give up as many chances.
FC Dallas forward Tesho Akindele
On his goal…
I just saw Maxi [Urruti] setting up for a shot. He’s a great finisher so I knew he was either going to score or there was going to be a rebound. I was ready for the rebound, it hit off the goalkeeper’s back and fortunately, I was at the right place at the right time after that.
What was the message to you at halftime…
Oscar said just bring in energy and try to stretch the defense… Just to play my game. The message at half time was that it was going to come. He said we had a few chances in the first half and we need to just believe in our team and that it was going to come.
On playing without Mauro Diaz…
He’s obviously a super important part of our team and one of the best players in MLS so to change the way we played, we started with more center midfielders than a pure No. 10 like he is. We just tried to control the midfield and at halftime we decided to switch that up.
