General thoughts on the match
Obviously the result says it all. We didn’t have a good night and I think Houston deserved to win the game. I have to congratulate them and their coach, they had an excellent game. We couldn’t find a rhythm all game. We had a little reaction in the second half but it wasn’t strong enough. It’s a lesson we have to [learn]. The game is a day-by-day work. But, we have to move on. As I said to my players, we learned a lesson. Now, we need to keep moving forward. These are the players I want to coach and I will stay behind them.
How do you make sure this result doesn’t affect future games?
I hope I can do that. This game teaches you all the time. When we had a bad experience last year… [We had] days where we couldn’t put two passes together. We moved on and learned and got the team into the semifinals, so I have a group of players that I’m committed to with this project and today, obviously, wasn’t our day. It was one of those nights where nothing works out and we have to analyze the game and need to learn from it, We’ll keep pushing.
How did the early goals affect the team?
It’s hard when you come in the first half and have almost two own goals. Things like those happen but obviously it’s a very difficult moment to overcome. We tried in the second half and I have to give credit to my players because despite of the result I never found a team who was giving up… I see players trying to find answers but as you said it was a very, very difficult moment when you give up two own goals in the first half. Houston did a good job. They came pretty sharp and it cost us.
On tonight’s match...
We were bad. Nobody played well. We weren’t prepared right from the whistle. You can’t come into a rivalry game against a team like Houston… In their own stadium, like that. It’s not acceptable.
On the own goal...
I looked up, and I didn’t know he was coming. I didn’t know where Barnes was because I had just run in front of his run, so I just knocked it back to him so he could knock it out and by the time I had passed it and looked up, he was coming.
On tonight’s match
Yeah, it was a tough one. We came out flat and they took it to us. Once they got the first one, we kind of had our heads down and, boom, they got a second one and a third and it was just hard for us to bounce back after that. It was a tough game. We just take this game and learn from it and we’ve got Montreal at home. We’ve got some positives to take away, but we take our negatives into account and try to keep pushing ourselves and keep building from this.
