We all know 2016 will go down as one of the best years in club history for FC Dallas. A second straight 60 point season that saw them lift the Supporters’ Shield trophy for the first time and the US Open Cup for the first time since the late 1990s.
Being that it is the end of the year, I felt it was right to list a few of my favorite games from this past season.
Philadelphia Union - March 6 - 2-0 win
The season opener was a pretty special one. FC Dallas was coming off a strong finish to the 2015 season that saw them nearly go to a MLS Cup. The momentum was high too with the offseason signings of guys like Carlos Gruezo and Maxi Urruti.
And then things like this happened:
The goal, the celebration, everything about it was a sign of things to come in 2016.
Portland Timbers - April 13 - 3-1 win
Once the schedule came out for the season, one game set of games was pretty much circled on a lot of our calendars. The first trip to Portland of the season was a big one as the Timbers were struggling on the season as defending champs and FC Dallas made no mistake about how badly they wanted this game.
Orlando City - July 4 - 4-0 win
The big July 4th matchup is always one you want to see FC Dallas come out strong in as Toyota Stadium is expected to be filled to capacity. This season the boys didn’t disappoint with a big beating over Orlando in their first visit to North Texas.
The win extended the clubs home winning streak to 15 games at that point in the year. Mauro Diaz had a stellar afternoon with a couple assists while Michael Barrios and Fabian Castillo terrorized the Orlando wings with their pace.
New England Revolution - September 13 - 4-2 win
What more can we possibly say about that night in September? The goals. The emotions of winning the first title since what felt like forever. Lifting the monkey off the backs of guys like Oscar Pareja and Fernando Clavijo who had worked so tirelessly in building this roster.
I know personally it will be a night that I will never forget. There truly is something magical about seeing your club lift a trophy at home.
Seattle Sounders - October 16 - 2-1 win
I debated long and hard about my fifth and final game of the season. It came down to this one and the draw in LA that saw the club lift the Shield. But I think in the end it was this one that had more meaning to me. Yes it was a bittersweet game in the end that saw Diaz go down with his Achilles injury. But that come back by this club was magical to watch and that goal from Carlos Ruiz as we all know could go down as one of the best in club history.
