Will FC Dallas be active in the 2016 Re-Entry Draft?

Last year brought us Maxi Urruti but this year may not bear anything.

The MLS offseason is a wild one that we’ve discussed a bit over the last few weeks on this space. One of the more interesting parts of it is the Re-Entry Draft. Last week, the first stage came and went with FC Dallas passing on their pick. Thursday will be stage two, the round where teams can picks players and then work on a new salary with them.

But judging by the talent in the Re-Entry pool, will FC Dallas even be interested in looking at anyone? I’m going to go out on a limb and say they will not be active.

High prices names and ‘meh’ mid-level guys

The amount of talent still available out there likely won’t improve the team here and we know they’re likely not going to shell out for Pedro Morales or Alvaro Saborio from this list.

If we were purely looking for depth and we didn’t have next month’s SuperDraft, there are only a couple names I would even consider at a lower salary like defenders Josh Williams, Chad Barson; midfielders Michael Stephens and Cristian Maidana, and midfield-forward Stephen Neumann.

Few roster spots remain

The club only has so many roster slots left on the table for 2017 (though loans can help that out). The club has made several big moves already this offseason by adding new Homegrown players to signing a trio of international players.

Then there is the reported signing of Reggie Cannon to a HGP deal and that rumor of Javier Morales joining the team.

FC Dallas Roster

Goalkeepers (2) Defenders (8) Midfielders (10) Forwards (5)
Goalkeepers (2) Defenders (8) Midfielders (10) Forwards (5)
Jesse Gonzalez Anibal Chala Kellyn Acosta Tesho Akindele
Chris Seitz Maynor Figueroa Michael Barrios Colin Bonner
Aaron Guillen Coy Craft Jesus Ferreira
Atiba Harris Mauro Diaz Bryan Reynolds
Matt Hedges Carlos Gruezo Maxi Urruti
Moises Hernandez Ryan Hollingshead
Jose Salvatierra Roland Lamah
Walker Zimmerman Timo Pitter
Paxton Pomykal
Victor Ulloa
As of 12/22/16

But with those moves and January’s SuperDraft, which FCD currently has three picks in the first two rounds and then another four in the third and fourth rounds. In a small way, if you get drafted by FCD, good luck because it will be a dog fight to make the roster with those odds.

The rosters could still expand to 30 before next season as one report out there already suggests the league is adding more HGP slots, which would certainly help a team like FCD.

What do you think of FCD sitting out the Re-Entry Draft today? Would you be disappointed or relieved?
