Lost in the shuffle of yesterday’s Expansion Draft excitement in MLS was the start of the new free agency period. As of 4pm CT yesterday, teams can now negotiate with.
This year there are a total of 37 available free agents (full list here). Below are a few that I think could be a good fit here in Dallas in 2017 should FC Dallas go this route in their roster buildout.
Be for warned, I’m going heavy on the defensive side with these suggestions.
Corey Ashe - Columbus - out of contract
I’ve been following Ashe’s career ever since he was drafted by Houston back in 2007. At this point he is a capable veteran in this league that can play on the outside back, an area that FCD could use a boost in this winter. The one-time All-Star has bounced around a little bit in the last two years after leaving Houston for Orlando and then going to Columbus this past season. At just around $100k, it would be a pretty cheap addition to the back line.
DeMarcus Beasley - Houston - out of contract
Yes, DMB is getting up there in age and his contract is super hefty (we’re talking DP levels at $750k base). But if you can talk him down a bit in price and point to a fact that he will be apart of a bigger thing here next year with all the CCL games that FCD will be involved in, it would be a lot of fun watching him on the defense next to Matt Hedges and Walker Zimmerman.
Sean Franklin - DC United - out of contract
Franklin is another veteran outside back that can still do plenty in this league. He also knows what it takes to deal with the long season that involves CCL games and long playoff runs (from his time in LA). He won’t be cheap though as he would basically replace the money that Zach Loyd was making here (around $225k). But if the club is looking for some veteran leadership to replace Loyd with, Franklin would be a good place to start.
Javier Morales - Real Salt Lake - out of contract
I’ve been pretty adamant with the BDS staff here on Morales that I don’t want to see him here as a replacement to Mauro Diaz. But if the club can convince him to be 2017’s Mauro Rosales, then I am all for it. But we’ll have to see him come down from that hefty $560k-ish salary first because you don’t go from spending $62k on Rosales to spending that much on Morales if you are keeping him in the same role next year.
Marvell Wynne - San Jose - out of contract
Yes, I’m basically going to advocate for just about any veteran fullback on this list that I can. But Wynne has been one of those guys that I’ve always been intrigued by. His speed is still pretty solid as I saw him track down guys like Michael Barrios a couple times this past season. He is familiar with Oscar Pareja thanks to his brief time in Colorado too. His salary was similar to Franklin and Loyd’s in 2016, so it wouldn’t be outlandish to sign him around that figure.
Are there any other free agents you’d be interested in seeing FCD go after this winter? Let us know below.
