The mountain was just too high to climb in the end.

The season has come to an end for FC Dallas despite winning Sunday night 2-1 over the Seattle Sounders.

Goals from Tesho Akindele and Maxi Urruti were not enough to overcome the three goals scored in the first leg by Seattle as FCD dropped the series 4-2 on aggregate.

Dallas came out early with pressure in this one as they looked to reduce the aggregate scoreline. Maynor Figueroa had a shot in the 14th minute that was low and hard that was heading towards the far post before it hit off Kellyn Acosta and was redirected to the near post. Stefan Frei was able to get a save on the redirect to the keep Dallas off the score sheet.

Frei came up huge in the 20th minute on another deflected shot that hit off Zach Scott in the penalty box right to the feet of Atiba Harris. The veteran full back’s shot wasn’t strong enough to beat Frei.

FCD got their first goal in the 24th minute on a throw-in that found Harris on the wings. He went a ball into the middle of the penalty box to Akindele who headed home the game’s first goal.

Seattle brought pressure to start the second half and made Dallas pay for some poor touches in the back. In the 54th minute, Tyrone Mears stole the ball from Walker Zimmerman on the right side. He played a ball across goal where Nicolas Lideiro was waiting on the back post to put in the game-tying goal.

It didn’t take long for Dallas to respond a minute later on another cross from Harris on the right side that finds Mauro Rosales who heads the ball back across the goal where Urruti was there to put the ball in the goal.

Dallas nearly found a third in the 77th minute as a ball was played into the box that forced Frei off his line near the far post. He misjudged the cross and Carlos Lizarazo played the ball back in across goal where Ryan Hollingshead tried to volley it in only to see it saved off the line.

Dallas still ends the season with two trophies, the league’s Supporters’ Shield title for best record and the US Open Cup trophy.
