Good fit at the '9'?

Potential FC Dallas target?
Potential FC Dallas target?

As reported in Bild and Soccer by Ives this week, Red Bull Leipzig have made it knows that Terrence Boyd can be had in the winter window. Boyd has only recently regained match fitness and is currently playing with the RB Leipzig's reserve team after missing the last 2 years with various knee injuries. With a stacked forward corps to compete with, he might be looking for a landing spot to rebuild his value.

In 2 years at Rapid Vienna, he scored 28 goals in 59 league appearances and looked like he was primed to take the next step up the ladder in the Bundesliga and with the national team. The 6'2" Boyd provides a big body to go with superb skill, and if healthy, could slot right in as the target striker FC Dallas has been missing.

Although a healthy Boyd would easily fit like a glove, two years of injuries make any play for Boyd a very risky one. On top of that, he's almost assuredly be making DP money on what's left of his contract, so FC Dallas would very likely have to complete the transfer of Fabian Castillo (which looks shaky) or sell Carlos Gruezo (not ideal) to accommodate Boyd as the 3rd DP.

His contract runs through June, so a short term loan (or a new contract) are not out of the question. It could be possible to add him as a non-DP for 2017 with subsequent years backloaded with salary (and a DP spot- think Nigel De Jong in LA). Another benefit of going after Boyd is he is not on the MLS Allocation List, so we wouldn't have to give up anything to get the top spot in the allocation order.

It would be risky for certain, but pair him with Joseph Gyau (another guy with mega potential, two years of injuries, and not on the Allocation List), and FC Dallas could effectively re-load for the new season and a run in CONCACAF Champions' League. These two moves should also help sell tickets and placate the section of the fanbase disgruntled by a lack of 'big' signings in recent years.

What do you think? Would the signing of two capped US players to the roster get you out to the games more next year? Too risky for your taste?
