FC Dallas is now in a large hole after their 3-0 loss on Sunday night to the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference semifinals. The Supporters’ Shield winners will return home this week with hopes of pulling off a miracle in the second leg.
Seattle had several chances early in the first half to get on the board. In the opening minutes Jordan Morris played a ball in across the goal where Nelson Valdez got a header on it that forced Chris Seitz to make a goal line save to keep the score level.
The Sounders had another chance in the first half that was cleared off the line twice by Matt Hedges after two attempts by Nicolas Lodeiro.
Dallas only had a couple decent looks on goal in this game, including a long-range shot from Maynor Figueroa in the 20th minute.
Seattle made the breakthrough on goal right after halftime on a header by Valdez that beat Seitz and Figueroa. Joevin Jones got up the left wing for the Sounders and played a perfectly curling ball that forced Seitz off his line. The veteran keeper misread the play and Valdez made him pay.
Seattle scored again in the 55th minute on another play from the wings. This time it was Morris riding up the left side where he played a ball across goal to the back post where Lodeiro was waiting to put it into the back of the net.
Lodeiro added a second goal on the night to give the Sounders the commanding three goal lead in the 58th minute. Once again it was Jones up the left side with pace on a counter attack that caught the Dallas defense off guard. Jones played another cross to Lodeiro that beat Seitz.
The two clubs will meet for the second leg of the conference semifinals on Sunday at 8pm at Toyota Stadium.
