Where the FC Dallas Roster Stands (With Rumors)

New, 8 comments

We take a look at what we think the 2016 FCD team will look like so far.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

There have been a lot of rumors of signings and of people leaving FC Dallas recently, so I've decided to put them all in one place and see where the roster stands. Back in early December of last year (2015, yeah I know, feels weird), MLS teams announced their initial roster decisions for the 2016 season. We wrote about FC Dallas' here. Let's look at those decisions and see where the roster stands as of right now.

FC Dallas Roster

Signed/Under contract (18)

GK (2): Jesse Gonzalez (HG), Chris Seitz

D (7): Aaron Guillen (HG), Atiba Harris, Matt Hedges, Moises Hernandez (HG), Ryan Hollingshead, Zach Loyd, Je-Vaughn Watson (INT'L)

M (7): Kellyn Acosta (HG), Michael Barrios (INT'L), Fabian Castillo (DP), Coy Craft (HG), Mauro Diaz (DP, INT'L), Victor Ulloa (HG), Alejandro Zendejas (HG)

F (2): Tesho Akindele, Maximiliano Urruti

Designated Players (DP): 2 of 3 filled

Homegrown Players (HG): 7

International Roster Spots Filled (INT'L): 3

Generation Adidas Players (GA): 0

As far as we can tell, these are the players that are definitely on the roster as of right now. Notice our roster is different than that of the roster on the ML website here. Two players are missing from their list: Ezequiel Cirigliano and Rolando Escobar. You're saying "Hey, I clicked on that link up there in the first paragraph and you guys said both these guys were still on the team for 2016." You're right, we did essentially say that. So did the press release sent by the team. However, this is where things get tricky. It looks like Escobar found himself a new home in Venezuela with Deportivo Anzoátegui. Considering the official Twitter account of their team tweeted it, he's gone.

Also, there has been a lot of chatter all over Twitter about Cirigliano not returning. This comes as a surprise because everyone assumed he would be. When he was signed last summer, the terms of the deal were not disclosed (obviously, because MLS is MLS). It was assumed that Cirigliano was on loan from River Plate, but no one knew if it was until the end of the season, or one year, or possibly even longer. So, evidently his loan has ended and Fernando Clavijo and Oscar Pareja decided not to extend it or buy him, and he's being linked with numerous other clubs for another loan spell away from River Plate. But who knows? Maybe he'll return to Frisco and this is all nonsense talk.

Rumored/Negotiating with (3)

GK (0):

D (1): Walker Zimmerman

M (2): Yohandry Orozco (INT'L), Juan Esteban Ortiz (INT'L)

F (0):

First let's talk about Zimmerman. His contract ended at the end of last season. He graduated from Generation Adidas status, meaning his salary would count against the cap now. So, FC Dallas extended him a Bona Fide Offer. Zimmerman is fully expected to sign and remain with the team in 2016. It just hasn't been confirmed or announced just yet.

Now let's get to the juicy stuff. Two South Americans (of course) have been thrown around a lot into the conversation with FCD: Yohandry Orozco (Venezuela) and Juan Esteban Ortiz (Colombia). Both have been reported as signed or the club is in negotiations with them. Orozco is a winger or attacking midfielder and will provide depth behind Castillo/Diaz/Barrios up front if he's signed. Ortiz, a defensive midfielder, is likely the replacement for Cirigliano and depth behind Acosta and Ulloa.

The transfer window opens in February, so maybe these deals will be announced then.

If all this is true, what will happen with those seven remaining spots? What do you think? Chime in below.
