FC Dallas vs New York City FC: The Hat Trick

FC Dallas takes on a host of big soccer names tonight in Frisco.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

After a wildly successful game last weekend in Columbus, FC Dallas will look to continue their winning ways against a talented, but shaky New York City FC team. Here are my three thoughts:

Don't Slip

At this point in the year, FC Dallas has to win the games that on paper, they should. Earlier in the year, FC Dallas lost 4-0 to Colorado at home, 2-0 to Chicago on the road, even 2-1 to a Drogba-less Montreal on the road as well. This team is currently holding their own destiny to the Supporter's Shield and it's games like this that have to be wins. This doesn't mean that FC Dallas should see NYCFC as a pushover, they aren't, it just means that these are the games that championship-caliber teams should be winning come September.

Jes-See What He's Doing?

Jesse Gonzalez has been great. The 20-year-old has only allowed one goal in 270 minutes, good for a 0.33 goals-against average. The youngster has already faced two penalty kicks in his young career, and while both have been put wide, I don't think I'm alone in saying that he was in the right spot on both.

He appears to be a very instinctual keeper and simply knows how to work between the pipes. Last week showed FCD fans that the feature is going to be okay because, the kids are alright.

No Barriers for Barrios

Michael Barrios has been possibly the best move the team has made this season. He has five goals, all coming since July 4th. He's been the offensive spark whenever Fabian Castillo isn't there to provide it, and when Castillo is there as well — look out defenses.

If both start on the outsides tonight, that could cause a NYCFC defense that's given up 46 goals a lot of headaches as they lack the necessary speed to keep up with the pacey players.

I hope you enjoy tonight's game.
