A pure player for player swap.

FC Dallas has made a deal today with the Montreal Impact sending Canadian midfielder Kyle Bekker to the Impact in exchange for defender Bakary Soumare.

The 29-year old Soumare had fallen out of favor in Montreal following their defeat in the finals of the CONCACAF Champions League earlier this year. The veteran defender has played in MLS for a number of years, earning over 100 caps between the Impact and the Chicago Fire.

At the international level, Soumare has been capped 13 times by Mali since 2008, playing World Cup qualifying matches as well as matches in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Moving out Bekker, a guy that never fully worked out here in Dallas really signals a midfielder is on the way to this club through the transfer window that recently opened up. Bekker only played eight times for FCD, starting twice before dealing with a lot of international callups from Canada this summer.

In terms of pure talent in this deal, I'd say Dallas got the better end of the deal as Soumare adds the central defender depth that Dallas has been looking to add here this year. How he fits in with this defensive group remains to be seen but he is an upgrade over Bekker in my opinion.

Soumare was unhappy as of late with his playing time in Montreal so on the surface it seems weird for him to land in Dallas. Still, given the amount of minutes lost to injury, suspension and callups this year for the Dallas defense, I would wager he will get plenty of playing time here as the year goes on. Plus, a change of scenery always does wonders for a guy that is unhappy.

What do you make of this deal?
