Quote Sheet

FC Dallas Head Coach, Oscar Pareja

On the result…

I was pleased because the last 30 minutes were difficult to hold that result. Frustrated, because it was a game that was coming with the plan we had drawn, and we had the three points in our pocket. After the ejection of Blas [Perez] I knew it was going to be difficult.

On being opportunistic and patient…

Yeah, we decided on a plan today, which was to drop the line and the pressure and the zone too. We didn’t want to pressure Colorado up front. We wanted their center backs to have the ball. We knew we could hurt them with the speed that we have in the transition. I thought it worked well.

When Colorado went to Dallas, they hurt us a lot in the spaces we gave them in behind of the midfielders. I think they’re very good at that. They have players who are smart and can go get those spaces and hurt. So we wanted to just compact the middle, let them into it, and I thought it worked. We had a few options and not just one that could probably give us another goal. I remember Colorado hit the post from Nick and another chance that they have I thought it was well, I liked my team tonight.

On not much danger other than a few Colorado chances…

I thought we played very smart today, and at the end, we played not just smart, but with heart and we came out with a point and that’s valuable.

FC Dallas Defender, Zach Loyd (#17)

On hanging on to the point with 10 men…

I think once we went down a man, when that happens, you kind of have to bunker. I’m kind of upset we didn’t get the full three points, but it’s good to come away with a point considering the situation. Those few clearances I had, it was more about positioning than anything. We work on that week in, week out. I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time, so it was fortunate, but I’m still kind of upset we didn’t get all three points.

FC Dallas Midfielder, Ryan Hollingshead (#12)

On how things played out in the first half…

I think in the beginning we wanted to make sure that we were compact and organized. We wanted to make sure that we had our shape, and once we got into a rhythm of the game, we wanted to attack and attack quickly. That’s one of our strengths: being able to catch teams off guard, get them on their heels a little bit and so that’s what our goal was going in. We looked to get a couple of chances and we were confident that we would score goals as long as we could hold them to 0, we’ll get the win. That was kind of our game plan from the beginning, let’s stay compact, let’s be organized and let’s make sure we kind of get into a rhythm of the game before we start bombing forward.

On finding solidity first before picking and choosing attacking options…

Exactly. They kind of overload by putting guys in the midfield, and they dropped Dillon Powers in there and they dropped their other forward, Badji in that space. In the beginning we wanted to see their tendencies, see what they’re going to try to do, bring both of our outside mids to tuck in a little bit more and just kind of understand what was going to happen. We caught that pretty fast and felt like in the first 5 minutes, 10 minutes we understood what they were doing there. From there, we started to kind of push forward and move forward more.

On getting comfortable only after 10-15 minutes…

Usually it’s quick, usually you can pick up on the tendencies quick. We had watched video on what they were going to do, and of course they throw some wrinkles in there and something changes. We knew it would be fast, we knew we had time, so that was good. It was just 10 minutes, get into it, understand what they were doing and turn our game on.

On difference between this match and the last one in Dallas…

Everything. After watching video of the first match in Dallas, it just looked like a completely different team. We were not compact, the lines between our defense and midfield and forwards were 30 yards deep so things that we had never done and weren’t part of our identity. We were looking back at the video like who is this team? What were we doing? I think part of it was coming out slow, and it just happened that a lot guys came out slow at the same time. And it doesn’t usually happen that way. There’s no excuses, that can’t be allowed, but we also were able to see that video and respond well in Toronto and respond well again here. Without that red card we felt comfortable and felt like we could have kept attacking, so that was brutal.
