Arizona United gets the job done in Austin

The affiliate continues its perfect start to the season with a 1-0 win over Austin Aztex.

Arizona United are lucky that wins and ties are the only way to earn points in soccer, because if it was based on style , they would be stuck at zero.

Arizona won its third consecutive match in as many road games, 1-0, over the Austin Aztex to go 3-0-0. United now sits at the top of the Western Conference with nine points, tied with Seattle Sounders FC 2. Dating back to the end of last season, United has now won seven straight league matches

The Aztex began the match swarming an overwhelmed Arizona defense, testing goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski in the fourth minute with a 3-on-1 break toward the net. But Woszczynski came off his line and dove to smother the ball before the attack could do any further damage.

Two minutes later, Austin's Sainey Touraygot behind the Arizona defense and found himself alone with just the keeper to beat. But he could never fully control the ball and his weak shot rolled tantalizingly wide to the right.

The last real dangerous moment for Arizona United came in the ninth minute when a long ball toward the box forced Woszczynskito come off his line and awkwardly head the ball out and away into the middle of the field. The ball landed at the feet of Kris Tyrpak who tried chip the ball over the keeper, but under-hit the shot that allowed Woszczynskito punch it away easily.

As was the case last week, United slowly took control of the game near the end of the first half and continued that throughout the second half, choking away most of Austin's attacking attempts. While Arizona did better with possession, its lone goal came off a defensive miscue by Austin.

Aztex keeper Devin Perales attempted to clear a ball, but his kicked bounced off an Aztex player down the left sideline and came back toward the middle of the pitch. Former FCD product Jonathan Top run up from behind an Austin player and took control of the ball before quickly passing to Brad Stisser along the right flank. Stisser drove toward the box before centering the ball to a charging Long Tan, who finished beautifully into the left side of the net.

It was the most brilliant moment in an otherwise gritty performance for United. The team now has one more road match, against a team it's already beaten (Orange County) before its home opener on April 25.
