Maybe it was something about being back in Texas or in front of the supporters, either way FC Dallas had no trouble on Friday night as they downed the Columbus Crew SC 3-1 in the opener of the ATX Pro Challenge in Austin, Texas.
Ryan Hollingshead had two first half goals to go along with Blas Perez's lone goal in the win.
FCD controlled the first half from start to finish as Oscar Pareja used a lot of starters for the first time in the preseason. One of those key guys was Mauro Diaz who helped set up the game's first goal to Perez in the 29th minute. Diaz ran at the Columbus defense and then sent in a sharp pass to Perez who volleyed it home for the goal past Columbus keeper Steve Clark.
Dallas wasn't done there, in the 39th minute Fabian Castillo once again proved why he was the team MVP in 2014 as he used his lightening speed against the Columbus defense to cause trouble. Castillo would put in a shot from close range on Clark, the Columbus keeper would get a save on it but the rebound would land in front of Hollingshead, who would calmly finish it.
Hollingshead would double his tally minutes later in the 44th minute. The set up was similar to the second goal as Castillo once again was the dangerous man on the ball. The speedy Colombian ran the length of the field before hitting a shot off the right post. Once again, Hollingshead was in position to take advantage and finished off the chance.
Columbus would get their lone goal in the second half. In the 64th minute, Ethan Finley put in an excellent pass to Icelandic midfielder Kristinn Steindorsson, who finished to the back post from seven yards out.
FC Dallas will now face D.C. United, who downed the hosts Austin Aztex on Sunday afternoon at 3:15 pm.
