Well, the playoffs are here. Finally! Since FC Dallas holds the top seed in the West, they will play the lowest seed to advance each round. So, there are three possible opponents FCD could meet in the Western Conference Semifinals: Los Angeles Galaxy, Seattle Sounders, and Sporting Kansas City. If SKC beat Portland Timbers in the knockout round, that's who Dallas will face. But, if SKC lose, then FCD will face the winner of Seattle and LA. Let's take a quick look at them and vote who we'd rather play.
So, not favorable results against LA this season. Dallas started off strong with a 2-1 win at home in May, but suffered a loss at home later in August by the same scoreline. To complete the series, FCD traveled to LA in late September, fell behind early before almost completing the comeback, eventually losing 3-2.
Outlook: Sure, LA is intimidating with the likes of Robbie Keane, Steven Gerrard, Gio dos Santos, Gyasi Zardes, and others on their squad. But, who isn't in the West? The way I see it, Dallas should feel confident if dealt LA. They can tear that defense led by Omar Gonzalez to shreds. Matt Hedges and company can pull out at least a draw on the road and this squad has been great all year at home.
The Galaxy play Seattle Wednesday night.
Not exactly favorable results against Seattle this year either. The two-game series started early this season in March in Frisco, TX. Both sides were missing key players in a foul-filled, dull match that ended 0-0. The next match was in Seattle in June, where young Alex Zendejas earned his debut in a 3-0 loss to the Sounders.
Outlook: Unsure about a playoff series with Seattle. Both games this year didn't tell much of a story. Seattle started off slow to the season and have only really started to gain their identity again as of late. This one is up in the air. You don't know when the Sounders will click again, but when they do they're one of the best in MLS. After last year in the playoffs, I think our guys are more confident about playing Seattle on a big stage and will step up to the occasion. Not too worried about Clint Dempsey and company this year.
The Sounders play LA Wednesday night.
It's fair to say that FC Dallas didn't play their best soccer in their two trips to KC this year. FCD played SCK four times this year in all competitions. One of their best performances all year, in my opinion, was the second game of the season in early March against Sporting. Fresh off a last minute win against San Jose at home the week before, Dallas dominated KC at home in a 3-1 win. Moises Hernandez was exceptional, shutting down Graham Zusi. But, the other three performances were not as great. Next they met in the Open Cup in a 6-2 loss in KC. Then again in the regular season twice more in KC, losing 4-0 and 3-1.
Outlook: Sporting Kansas City is the only team that scares me in the West, or the East for that matter. I feel confident that Dallas can beat any club. But, SKC worries me. Being outscored 14-6 in all competitions this season against them? Wow. I can't tell you what the reason is to why they've played so badly against Peter Vermes' group. But, if they face KC, it will be the toughest opponent they could face in the playoffs. Why? The mental factors at play. Oscar Pareja's tactics haven't worked against Vermes. The past results will be in the players' heads.
Kansas City plays Portland on Thursday night.
I know some of you might be worried about playing Seattle or LA because their star power, but in my opinion, SKC is the team we want to avoid. That is, if there's any team we would want to avoid. I feel confident against anyone.
