September Outlook: All about getting into the playoffs for FC Dallas

Four big games coming up for FC Dallas in September.

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

The fall months are nearly here as FC Dallas closed out the month of August with their first loss since May. Now they turn their sights to September, a month that could be the difference between a top three spot in the Western Conference or a wild card trip.

Real Salt Lake - away - September 7 (9 pm)

The first game off the bat is a huge one for the playoff positioning for FC Dallas. These two sides met just a couple weeks ago with FCD coming out on top in that wild 2-1 game. Now the return leg in Utah is here and for FCD, another draw or win in Salt Lake will have huge meaning towards what position they land on. At least FCD fans know that Blas Perez and Michel will be back for this one.

Vancouver Whitecaps - home - September 13 (7:30 pm)

This one will be big simply because the Whitecaps are in a desperate position at the moment to get into that fifth and final spot. FCD has a good cushion above Vancouver in the standings at the moment but will need to take care of business at home no matter what in this one.

LA Galaxy - away - September 20 (9:30 pm)

Trips to the StubHub Center against the Galaxy haven't been too kind to FCD in the past couple of seasons, including this one. LA is red hot at the moment and have a chance to go at the Supporters' Shield in Landon Donovan's final season. In my mind this may be the toughest game left on the schedule.

Seattle Sounders - home - September 24 (8:00 pm)

A quick turn around from the LA game for a midweek home match with the Sounders. We know how good the Sounders are here and what they'll bring to the table in this one. FCD did pretty well earlier this season against them but both results did end up in a loss. This one will certainly be huge but the Sounders could be coming off a USOC hangover of their own.

Just like I've hammered on for the last couple of months, for FCD to have a good shot at things this year they have to continue to win their home games. Those two games against the Cascadia teams are absolutely must-wins. Six points there is the minimum in my mind for this month with hopes of getting seven points (a draw in either road game).

This month won't be easy but if FCD can pick up six to eight points, they'll be doing themselves some massive favors for October. Right now the point cushion above the fifth through eighth place teams is there, but FCD cannot afford to lose any of that quality position.

What do you think the outcome of this month will be? Three points? Six points? Seven or eight? Or can the club pull off the perfect month and go for all 12?
