Previewing the upcoming expansion draft: Part 1

Steve Dykes-USA TODAY Sports

I know it's down the road and I'm a bit early, but we better start getting ready now. Orlando City got Kaka, NYCFC got David Villa, and now they're coming to cherry pick from MLS rosters. To get us prepared, I took a look at how prepared FC Dallas is for the upcoming fire sale of MLS players.

First off are the rules. Remember though, this is MLS, who knows what the rules will be next year. Here are the rules I found from the last few expansion drafts:

*Existing teams are allowed to protect 11 players from their rosters. Generation Adidas players were automatically protected.
*Homegrown players on the team's off-budget roster were automatically protected and did not count against each team's 11 protected roster spots.
*Teams can lose no more than two players.

So with all that in mind, let's break it down to see how this affects FCD and who I expect to go:

Exempt: Moises Hernandez, Kellyn Acosta, Danny Garcia, Jonathan Top, Jesse Gonzalez, Victor Ulloa, Walker Zimmerman (GA)

Protected: Matt Hedges, David Texeira (DP), Fabian Castillo, Mauro Diaz (DP), Hendry Thomas, Tesho Akindele, Raul Fernandez, Cobi Span, Chris Seitz, Ryan Hollingshead, Nick Walker.

Blas Perez, George John, Zach Loyd, Jair Benitez, Michel, Peter Luccin, Adam Moffat, Je-Vaughn Watson, Stephen Keel, Andrew Jacobson, Andres Escobar (DP).

Now, a little perspective:

I put Blas on the list due to multiple reasons. His age (34 at start of next season), his salary ($359k), and the fact that I expect these expansion teams will occupy their strikers with high-priced DPs as NYCFC has done already. I think you can get away with not protecting him. It's a gamble, but that's how this game is played. Then again, given his recent form, maybe it isn't such a gamble anymore.

I protected Texeira instead of Escobar because from what I know, we own Texeira. Escobar is on a loan. This is a fuzzy area as we don't even know if Escobar's loan is still going on at the time of the expansion draft.

I also protected Nick Walker and Ryan Hollingshead which may be surprising. However, I'm about protecting youth and potential. They have both.

Good as gone: John, AJ, and Loyd - Two of the three for me are out. My money is on AJ and Loyd. They just seem like solid veteran guys an expansion team could use.

So what do you guys think? Are we on the same page, or am I way off?

Note: As players are traded/sold, I will be updating this list with new perspectives.

Thanks to Drew for helping with the insight so I could edit this and have updated info!
