USMNT roster for the 2018 World Cup

Who could be on the roster and go to Russia in 2018?

Kevin C. Cox

Since everyone else is doing it...why not all of us too? I'll take a stab at it. We're looking at who could be in the next World Cup roster for the United States as we now prepare for Russia 2018.

Let me know what you think and comment with your roster. Obviously it's impossible to guess correctly, but it's still fun. Okay here we go...

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan, Tim Howard, Cody Cropper (Clint IrwinSean JohnsonBill Hamid)

I think everyone is in agreement that Guzan is our guy now. I still think Tim Howard makes it because of his experience and leadership. Might not play, but still nice to have him around. That leaves me with Cody Cropper. The 21-year-old just signed a new deal with Southampton FC and was the starting goalie for the US in the U-20 World Cup a while back. Just kind of throwing his name out there. Who knows?

Defenders: Matt Besler, Fabian Johnson, Deandre Yedlin, John BrooksOmar Gonzalez, Geoff Cameron, Timmy ChandlerKellyn Acosta (Shane O'NeillAndrew FarrellChris KluteAmobi Okugo, Will Packwood, Erik Palmer-BrownMatt HedgesWalker Zimmerman, Greg Garza)

It's tough to say who will start at CB, because both Besler and Brooks are left CBs. But, that could change and Jurgen Klinnsman could pair them up. I think Johnson and Yedlin will LB and RB. To back those guys up, Gonzalez will be there and could even start instead of Besler or Brooks. You also have the versatility of Cameron, who I don't know if he will make it again or not. Who knows how he will look in 4 years time. Other fullbacks to bring along (which is really just a wild guess) could include Acosta (woot woot!) and Chandler. But, I could easily see Chandler, Acosta, and Cameron being replaced.

Midfielders: Michael Bradley, Julian Green, Graham Zusi, Alejandro Bedoya, Mikkel Diskerud, Gedion Zelalem,Will TrappLuis GilDarlington Nagbe (Josh Gatt, Brek Shea, Joe Corona, Danny WilliamsPerry KitchenDillon PowersBenji Joya, Harry Shipp, Diego FagundezKekuta Manneh, Emerson Hyndman, Caleb Stanko)

This is the hardest part. Who will start in the midfield? So many people to consider and people we don't even know of yet to consider. Bradley will most likely captain us and I'm thinking if we snag Zelalem, we will end up running a 4-4-2 formation with them two in the middle of the park (if Zelalem is the prodigy we hope he is and he chooses us over Germany/Ethiopia). Then we have Green out left and who knows out right?

If we run a 4-3-2-1 again, maybe we see Mix as the attacking midfielder. Trapp is an excellent holding midfielder to bring in. A better version of Beckerman (but without dreads, well who knows? He could in 4 years). Gil can play just about anywhere and so can Nagbe, who should get his citizenship soon. There are so many options in the midfield to choose from. The speedster Gatt, maybe Shea, Shipp or others could make huge leaps in the next cycle. I could easily see players replace Zusi or Bedoya or others on my list.

Forwards: Jozy Altidore, Aron Johannsson, Juan Agudelo (Terrence BoydGyasi Zardes, Jack Mcbean, Paul Arriola, Bobby Wood, Joe Gyau, Marc Pelosi, Shawn Parker, Clint Dempsey)

Altidore will be hungrier than ever after missing out on this World Cup. He most likely isn't going anywhere. Hopefully he starts putting in goals with Sunderland or makes a move elsewhere. Johannsson is very talented. We saw him make an appearance after Altidore was injured. He didn't do much, but he has a bright future. If those two can start clicking, we will be very dangerous. Then we have Agudelo. I don't know if he'll make it. But, he's my best guess at the moment. Dempsey could even make it at 35. I bet he'll have a little gas left in the tank.
