While yesterday's result for the United States national team against Belgium was a disappointment, the numbers that are being reported from this game are showing that the sport is here to stay in our fair land.
ESPN is reporting that the Round of 16 game was the network's highest rated World Cup game ever with a 9.6 overnight rating. ESPN's television coverage peaked from 5:45 - 6 p.m. ET with a 14.1 rating while WatchESPN peaked at 1,500,000 concurrent viewers.
In total that was about
16.5 million 21.6 million viewers (those numbers are still being released, once I have a final number I'll be sure to update this post).
The Dallas-Fort Worth market wasn't in the top 10 for the nation but below could be why.
It should be noted that number is possible a good deal less than what being reported. I bring that up because a lot of people tuned in at watch parties at local bars, pubs, houses, and stadiums.
AT&T Stadium in Arlington had 20,000 people show up to their watch party. 20,000! I was told that officials with the Cowboys expected 5,000 people for their party.
FC Dallas held their own watch party again at the plaza outside of the American Airlines Center. Once again they had a few thousand show up for this game.
