Analyzing Klinnsman's pre-cup roster.

The news on the roster broke today around 2 pm local time as expected...

United States Campers:

GOALKEEPERS (3): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa/England), Tim Howard (Everton/England), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

DEFENDERS (11): DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla/Mexico), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), John Brooks (Hertha Berlin/Germany), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City/England), Timmy Chandler (Nürnberg/Germany), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Clarence Goodson (San Jose Earthquakes), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim/Germany), Michael Parkhurst (Columbus Crew), DeAndre Yedlin (Seattle Sounders)

MIDFIELDERS (10): Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes/France), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana/Mexico), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg/Norway), Maurice Edu (Philadelphia Union), Julian Green (Bayern Munich/Germany), Jermaine Jones (Besiktas/Turkey), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

FORWARDS (6): Jozy Altidore (Sunderland/England), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna/Austria), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar/Netherlands), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

This was pretty close to the consensus on who would make the squad.  The DFW area can boast Dempsey and Gonzo as local products as well as former FCD/Burn standouts Brad Davis and Clarence Goodson, and yet it seems like we should have at least one more Burn guy training in Palo Alto on Wednesday.

The only big surprise for me was the inclusion of Yedlin at the expense of Eddie Johnson.  I know there were arguments on the form of Eddie Johnson (carrying a knock, no goals), but he went a full 90 this weekend and was robbed of another goal based on a bad offside call.  How hard would this have looked had EJ not been ruled offside on what would have been the game-winner against Mexico a month ago?

And it's not all about Eddie Johnson's somewhat lukewarm form- Yedlin's looked downright poor for the last month.  I've witnessed him get burned alive by Nagbe and Castillo in the last month...and that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of awful yesterday was against New England.  Sigi Schmid, when asked if it was for injury or to protect his young charge since he knew he'd be part of the camp, simply stated that he was playing poorly.  The combination of more tangibly poor form and Eddie Johnson's edge in versatility, this was a headscratcher for me.

This is not to say I'm not a fan of Yedlin's.  I think he has huge potential, but I don't think it's realistic to expect him to round out his game with experience in the next month leading up to the Cup.'s Charles Boehm suggests this is a big sign Klinsmann's has major concerns for the defense leading up to Brazil 2014. This seems like a pretty legitimate point, as you can always point to the overall strong form (Jozy Altidore and Landon Donovan aside) of Eddie Johnson's competition in the pool of attackers.

This was the only real issue I have with the roster.  Aside from any personal favorites who I knew didn't have a chance (Bocanegra, Brek Shea, Bennie Feilhaber), this is more or less what I expected, and I'm pretty happy that you could make a legitimate case for several players who were omitted (despite what the trolls had to say about EJ's attitude and the overall weakness of the team- what a pack of asses).  What do you think?  Who is missing from your preferred 30?
