FC Dallas vs Vancouver Whitecaps: Preview and prediction

New, 6 comments

Time to see how FC Dallas can advance in tonight's game.

It all beings tonight with the Knockout Round playoff match for FC Dallas against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The two sides traded wins over the course of the regular season in their three meetings with a lone draw coming back in the summer in one of the two road games in Canada.

FC Dallas hopes to improve their impressive numbers against the Caps at home. They have outscored the Caps 10-2 in five meetings all-time in Frisco.

FC Dallas Notes:

Points earned. According to the club's game notes, In third place in the West with 54 points, FC Dallas has the highest point total in franchise history. The previous high was 52, which occurred twice: 2011 and 2006.

Michel's importance. In the 15 matches in which Michel has logged 90 minutes this season, the Brazilian set piece specialist has scored seven goals and three assists. Since July 19, Michel has played a role in 14 of Dallas' last 24 goals.

Consistences in the lineup. Since his emergence this season, Victor Ulloa has played in 30 consecutive matches for FC Dallas (across all competitions). Since making his first professional start in a 2‐1 loss to San Jose on May 10, Rookie of the Year candidate Tesho Akindele has appeared in 28 matches in a row (across allcompetitions).

Colombian connection. Of the 11 players with Colombian roots in MLS, FC Dallas (3) has the most. Castillo, Jair Benitez and Andres Escobar have collectively played 5,595 minutes this season. The trio has also scored 12 goals and added in 12 assists.

Quick Notes:

REFEREE: Mark Geiger. AR1 (bench): Charles Morgante; AR2 (opposite): Matthew Nelson; 4th: Ismail Elfath

LEAGUE HEAD-TO-HEAD: DAL 7 wins, 18 goals ... VAN 2 wins, 10 goals ... Ties 2

2014 HEAD-TO-HEAD: DAL 1 win, 4 goals ... VAN 1 win, 5 goals ... Ties 1

9/13: DAL 2, VAN 1 (Perez 20, 78 - Hurtado 67)

As disappointing as last weekend was, that game has to be out of the minds of the players going into tonight. FC Dallas has the home field advantage and the talent to advance over this Vancouver team. It all comes down to getting the trio of Castillo, Escobar and Blas Perez going in this one. Vancouver knows that they have to shut them down and will be looking to physically frustrate FCD in the process. As long as FCD doesn't get caught up in the emotions of this game, and play to the wings, they'll win this one.

I think it will be tight but FCD's season doesn't end here.

FC Dallas 2, Vancouver 1
