FC Dallas Finishes Florida Camp With 6-1 Win Over Fort Lauderdale Strikers

One goal and two assists for Fabian Castillo, along with the debut of Andres Escobar.

IMG Academy/FC Dallas

The final night in Florida was a big one for FC Dallas as they downed the Fort Lauderdale Strikers 6-1 in a preseason friendly.

FC Dallas gave up a goal early in the match before exploding to a 4-1 lead at half time thanks to two goals from Blas Perez and a goal from Fabian Castillo, who finished the night with two assists as well.

This was possibly the best we've seen Castillo in some time on the left flank. His passes were strong and his speed was really effective against a Strikers team that was using a lot of trialist according to their Twitter feed.

FCD got two second half goals from Je-Vaughn Watson and a penalty kick from Michel to help seal the match.

FCD returns to Frisco for their final two weeks of preseason with only a match at the NASL's San Antonio Scorpions on Saturday, March 1 left on their preseason schedule. FCD opens the 2014 MLS season at Toyota Stadium on Saturday, March 8 vs. Montreal Impact presented by AdvoCare.

Stray observations:

Castillo - Certainly his best performance in some time. If this is the kind of magic we can expect out of Oscar Pareja with these younger guys, then we're certainly in for a real treat this season. The speed was there like we thought but Castillo's passing on the night was at a different level for a change.

Perez - The dude just looks ready for the season to begin. He had a few goals in this Florida trip and he possible looks the most ready [to start the season] to me out of anyone on the field at the moment.

The youth - That last 10 minutes or so we saw a ton of young guys on the field. I rather enjoyed it too. The two academy guys played hard and I think showed us that they should be next in line for a HGP deal from the club. Nice to see Andres Escobar get his minutes as well. Not a lot to go off of here yet from him but I would imagine after a few weeks of being in camp and around his new teammates that he'll be just fine.

Defense - I have to say, the one thing that does worry me going into the season is the defensive group at the moment. Not to knock what Benitez, Hernandez, Hedges and Acosta have done thus far, I just think not having a healthy George John out there really does make a difference.

Leadership - That last item takes me to my next point, which I plan on touching on this week. With John still hurt, who does Pareja turn to for the captain to start the season? From the looks of it, we're going to get Jacobson as the one leading the charge. I'm alright with that.
