Panama Reaches Quarterfinals Of Gold Cup

New, comment

The 1-0 win over Martinique helps Panama reach the knockout round of the Gold Cup.

It took Panama longer than they would have liked but in the end they finally got the one goal that they needed to beat a 10-man Martinique squad Thursday night in Group A play of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

FC Dallas striker Blas Perez only played the last 25 minutes in the 1-0 win.

Striker Gabriel Torres coolly converted a penalty kick in the 85th minute, one minute after sub Jairo Jimenez had been brought down in the area. He had also scored on a penalty kick in the Canaleros' 2-1 win over Mexico.

The win gives Panama six points from two games, guaranteeing their entry into the knock-out round. Martinique are still in the hunt with three points from their two outings.

Perez and Panama will finish up Group A play on Sunday as they take on Canada in Denver. Kickoff for that match is set for 5:30pm CT.
