Big D Soccer Player of the Month: March

New, 15 comments

Time to vote on who was the top performer in the month of March for FC Dallas.

I wanted to get around to this earlier in the week but time alluded me here. So to kickoff Wednesday, we are going to do a little voting, discussing, ranting, raving, debating, and whatever else you want to call this. It is Big D Soccer's Player of the Month award time.

So let's break it down.

(This list is in no real order by the way)

David Ferreira - 5 games, 5 starts, 1 goal, 3 assists (tied for MLS lead in that category), 450 minutes played

What else can you say about the former MLS MVP? I'll let you all in a little secret, he is a candidate for the MLS Player of the Month award as well (an honor I get to vote in). He is tied with Patrice Bernier of Montreal for the most assists in MLS right now with three and has contributed in four out of the five games so far. His leadership has been his best quality though during FCD's fast start. Players are stepping up because of him and are doing more on and off the ball thanks to him.

Jackson Goncalves - 5 games, 5 starts, 2 goals (team leader), 1 assist, 440 minutes

Action Jackson is off to his best start since joining FC Dallas. With each passing game I am more impressed by him and his ability to improve. He still has moments that make you scream in anger (like the sitter he missed against New England last week), but overall you can't deny that his hustle and never ending motor has helped score some wild goals this year (those keeper blunders played a part in that too).

George John - 5 games, 5 starts, 1 goal, 450 minutes

I am a sucker for a quality defender and right now FC Dallas has a few of them. But none may be as good as John so far. While some of the goals scored against FC Dallas have been iffy this season, John has been consistent in his play through five games too. He has also stepped up as a natural leader in the defense as well - something the club needed since the day that Ugo Ihemelu went down with his injury.

Zach Loyd - 5 games, 5 starts, 450 minutes

Another defensive player to include here. Between the Houston game and most recently against New England, I have felt that Loyd has significantly raised his game in 2013. Against Houston he was making big stop after big stop against a Dynamo team that was relentless in the attack. If anything I see Loyd getting some serious consideration for a Gold Cup roster spot (along with John) this summer.

Michel - 5 games, 4 starts, 1 assist, 420 minutes

Left back, center midfield, it doesn't matter. Michel has proven that he has the chops to make it in MLS. So far his best spot appears to be in the midfield with Andrew Jacobson. But let's face it, the guy has service ability that this team needs out of the midfield and the flanks. He should have two assists on the year (his first was taken away in the first goal against Houston), and I'm sure more are on the way. We may complain about some of his corner kicks but his free kick abilities are solid and will play a big factor before long.

Just missing the cut:

Raul Fernandez (2 shutouts, 3 wins)

Kenny Cooper (5 starts, 1 goal)

Andrew Jacobson (5 starts, 1 goal)

Matt Hedges (5 starts, one massive block against RSL)

So there are my five candidates for you, but you can also place one below in the poll. Let's hear who you are taking and why in the comments below. Voting ends on Friday, when we will announce who the winner is.
