Quotes, Stats and Highlights From FC Dallas' Win Over Vancouver

Players and coaches respond to Saturday's win over Vancouver, plus highlights!

FC Dallas downed the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 on Saturday evening. Goals came from Blas Perez and an own goal on Whitecaps defender Brad Rusin.

Dallas controlled the bulk of the match, creating loads of chances left and right due to their high pressure on the wings. Dallas also controlled the set piece numbers on the night, with plenty of corner and free kicks to put the Whitecaps under consistent pressure.

FC Dallas players, coaches and staff wore black armbands with the words "Peace" and "West" printed on them. "Peace" was a tribute to those who lost their lives or were injured in the Boston Marathon bombing and was inspired by eight-year-old victim Martin Richard. "West" honored the firefighters and citizens who were injured or lost their lives in the devastating fertilizer plant explosion earlier this week in West, Texas.

FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman

Thoughts on the match...

We had an outstanding first half. We created a lot of opportunities, played with very good ball movement, very quick, very unselfish. We took a 1-0 lead, and then we came back in the second half and, again, just started right back. The guys played very well. Blas [Perez] scored a nice goal. We probably put Vancouver under more pressure than they've faced this year, consistent pressure. And they are a good team. We had an exceptional night tonight. The players played extremely well.

On the team's success with set pieces this season...

We practice it quite a bit. We realize it's one of our strengths. We've got a lot of size, but size doesn't mean everything. We've got people who are very courageous, who will put their heads places where most human beings won't when trying to attack a ball, and then we've got very good servers of the ball. We recognize it as one of our strengths. They surprised us with quite a few of their lineup choices and I think that was to nullify our size in the air.

On Blas Perez...

Blas is in great form. He's not only playing well for us, he's playing extremely well for Panama trying to qualify for a historic first World Cup. So, he's very focused, very motivated. He trains extremely hard. He's very competitive. I thought tonight he held the ball very well. He moved the ball. He made himself available for a lot of outlets, and again, dominating in the air. He won almost every head ball that really mattered.

On the defense posting three straight shutouts at home...

It's a combination of a couple of things. It's good players. It's communication between our goalkeeper and our defense improving every game. The coordination between the back four and the midfield is good. A lot of things get broken up in the midfield by Andrew Jacobson and Michel before it gets to our defense. Kenny's [Cooper] working hard. Jackson's working hard. It's a lot more difficult to break us down. I think Matt [Hedges] and George [John] had excellent games tonight, not only winning balls in the air, but winning balls on the ground.

On earning the most points by any head coach in FC Dallas history...

As I said to the players, it's not been an easy road. We've put a lot into it... Myself, my staff and the players. Nobody gets any awards in this environment without the players. This recognition goes all the way back to our first game we earned a point in. I'm very, very thankful. I think I'm blessed to be doing what I love, and I have a great group of guys in the locker room.

FC Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez

Thoughts the on game...

I'm happy about the win at home. We continue to be very strong at home. We have a good group and over the week that's what we've been working towards accomplishing.

On being one of the top keepers in league after the media discussed communication issues earlier in the season...

I'm calm. The media can look at what we're doing on the field and as we're playing throughout the weeks they can make their decisions.

On Vancouver's chance late in the first half...

It wasn't a good ball to grab, but since we've been playing with confidence, I decided to go for it, which didn't go well. Thank God my teammates were able to come in and we were lucky it went well.

FC Dallas forward Blas Perez

Thoughts on game...

We have to keep working hard, as the problem is to be on top and keep being on top. We're strong at home. Adding the three points at home is fundamental to our success.

To what is the success due?

We have a good group. Everyone is working towards the same goal. We needed to get to this top position to give us some peace. Right now there's harmony between the group and I hope that it continues to be that way.

FC Dallas defender Jair Benitez

How do you feel about the game?

Great, I am very happy. This was a very important game for us. We won. We are coming along great. We've been getting results, which is the most important thing for us.

The defense is playing very well, talk about that.

Our defensive shape has been solid. We have been getting shutouts and not allowing our opponents a lot of chances. Plus, we have been able to help ourselves out a lot by finishing our chances offensively.

Today you played more defensively?

Yes, the man I was marking was very fast and strong. I wanted to be careful so I focused more on the defensive side of the ball. We have taken our chances very well this season. I was worried Blas [Perez] wasn't going to get a goal today despite having several opportunities. I am glad he ended up getting one there in the second half. I am very happy for him.
