2014 MLS SuperDraft Profiles: Steve Birnbaum

Another center back? Really? Well, this one may be too good to pass up.

While FC Dallas may already have a slew of center backs, our next 2014 MLS SuperDraft profile may be a guy that could be tough to pass on at number five, or at least he could be some serious trade bait for someone else. We're looking at senior defender from California, Steve Birnbaum.

Birnbaum is your typical big center back. Sitting at 6-foot-2, the hulking Birnbaum helped lead Cal to an impressive season this past year. Along the way he was named a NSCAA First Team All-American and has been rated as one of the top senior defenders in this draft.

In this year's NCAA tournament, he helped Cal out of the second round with a game-winning goal against Bradley. He contributed in a shutout win over Coastal Carolina before falling to eventual national runner-up Maryland.

His totals from Cal weren't bad either, although he did miss the majority of the 2012 season with an injury. He ended his career with 12 goals and seven assists, not too bad from a center back.

Dallas is flush with quality center backs at the moment so this may seem like a bit of a stretch to see the club go defensive yet again through the draft. But given comments I've heard from Dan Hunt and Fernando Clavijo, it is still very possible. I would be willing to say that there is more talent in the defensive side through this draft this year than on the offensive side of things.
