One of the great things about the SB Nation Soccer network is 19 blogs led by people who all follow their teams closely providing a level of detail to their own club that national people really have trouble attaining. While not all these writers follow the the draft as closely as others, the mock draft is a fun way to showcase the network.
With that in mind, we conducted our 2013 MLS mock draft on Sunday afternoon. I, of course, drafted for FC Dallas and here are my picks (all picks are posted on the individual MLS blogs, I will post a recap in the comments when it is up):
#7 Overall - John Stertzer Senior M University of Maryland
It really came down to two choices for me. With the forwards that I like off the board, the obvious choice becomes central midfield depth and that made it a choice between Stertzer and Notre Dame midfielder Dillon Powers. While it may surprise a few, when it came down to I think FC Dallas will pick the ACC kid. He's one they were watching closely at the College Cup and someone they're extremely familiar with having scouted Maryland extensively given the obvious homegrown FCD talent that plays there.
Stertzer would be a perfect guy to bring in to room with London Woodberry and he provides a bit of an offensive tint to the box to box midfield position that will be a nice change of pace from Andrew Jacobson.
#20 Overall - Blake Smith Senior Winger University of New Mexico
FCD is ecstatic to be able to address their other need with the #20 pick as winger Blake Smith, rated as the top true winger in this year's draft class, falls to Dallas at #20 overall. Needing an offensive "super sub" winger to bring off the bench, Smith fits perfect into Dallas' need and it's an easy choice for Schellas Hyndman.
