The Month Ahead: Mapping Out March

FCD faces Olsen's Army in the final game of March

Boy is it fun to be able to seriously look at the upcoming schedule in the terms of days rather than weeks and weeks rather than months.

The Basics

FC Dallas has four games in March, two in Frisco and two on the road. It's a very interesting schedule that will see Dallas play three teams for the only time this season with NYRB coming to Frisco and trips to fellow Eastern Conference foes Sporting KC & DC United. The schedule is also national TV-heavy with two appearances on NBC Sports Network & one on Galavision while the days of the games are a bit unconventional with two on Sunday, one on Saturday & one on Friday night.

A closer look

Sunday, March 11 vs New York Red Bulls 2PM FC Dallas Stadium (NBC Sports Network)

The curtain raiser and highest profile game for FC Dallas since MLS Cup 2010 as the entire soccer nation will be watching to see what kind of show NBC puts on. For FC Dallas, it's a chance to win their home opener for the first time since 2007 and exact some revenge for the 2011 playoff exit at the hands of Thierry Henry and co...

Saturday, March 17 vs Portland Timbers 7:30PM FC Dallas Stadium (FS Southwest Plus)

The second game of the season sees FC Dallas take on a Portland Timbers side that could be one of the better ones in MLS by the middle of the season, but is also a side still finding their identity in attack with the new Scottish signing Kris Boyd heading things up. Portland will have an emotional season opener at home against Philadelphia Monday night on ESPN(That we will watch at Big D Soccer Pub Night!) so you've got to like Dallas' chances at home taking on an abysmal 2011 road team that will be playing on short rest. Reminder, FC Dallas beat Portland 4-0 in Frisco last season.

Sunday, March 25 at Sporting Kansas City 6PM LiveSTRONG Sporting Park (FS Southwest, Galavision)

Dallas' first road game of the season will be played at the site of their most memorable road win of 2011, where Dallas staged an epic 3-2 comeback win in the last game called by the late Bobby Rhine. SKC is certainly one of the trendy favorites to win the Eastern Conference in 2012 and will be playing Dallas with plenty of rest. This is, by far, the toughest game of the month.

Friday, March 30 at DC United 630PM RFK Stadium (NBC Sports Network)

After the Sporting KC game comes an awkwardly timed affair at RFK Stadium against a DC United team that probably need to make the playoffs in 2012 to save Ben Olsen's job. DC has re-signed Dwayne DeRosario and has brought in Albanian forward Hamdi Salihi from Rapid Vienna to lead their strike force. FCD and DC played to a 0-0 bore draw at RFK last year, and DC will be returning home after playing at Vancouver the previous Saturday night so neither team really has a travel advantage.

Things change so much from year to year that it's tough to know how good Portland, New York & DC will be as we sit here in week 1, but I think there's certainly some winnable games here. In my opinion, 6 points would be acceptable, 7 points would be nice and 9 points or more would be a fantastic haul. Let's get it started...
