Moment #10: FC Dallas U18's win US Soccer Development Academy National Championship

The first of our top 10 moments that shaped 2012 is the only moment that doesn't actually deal with the first team.

For years now it's been close but no cigar for the FCD Academy as they steadily moved into the national academy elite. In 2009-2010, FCD made it to finals week for the first time while in 2010-2011, the U18s lost to Pateadores in the national championship game.

In 2012, they navigated through a wild finals week containing a 90th minute winner against Baltimore Bays Chelsea and a come-from-behind 3-2 win over DFW rivals Solar to earn a championship game matchup against Vancouver Whitecaps at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.

In a wild championship game, FCD twice came from behind with two goals from Diego De La Tejera, becoming the first MLS team to win the U18 Development Academy Championship.

For years to come, it will be fascinating to take a look back at what has happened to the 15 players who suited up in that epic final. Currently 6 of the 15 play D1 NCAA soccer, 2 have been signed to homegrown contracts and 4 others are on the current U18 2012-2013 Academy team.
