With the news that George John could be heading to England to play for Blackburn Rovers, FC Dallas is already making plans to make up for the loss of the big defender. Today, the club has traded midfielder Eric Alexander to the Portland Timbers for midfielder/defender Jeremy Hall.
This may come to a surprise to some but Alexander was really starting to be the odd-man out in the midfield for Dallas. Newcomers like Daniel Cruz, Ricardo Villar and even Andrew Jacobson have really pushed Alexander aside in the pecking order. Getting traded is actually going to be a good thing for his career, similar to what a trade (or waiver) did for Peri Marosevic and Eric Avila.

Grabbing Hall seems like an interesting move though too. Hall hasn't played well in Portland this year and does get exposed in the defense at times. I do see this as a good move for Hall though as he will come to a club that will find a way to use him right. I've seen this kid play numerous times through out his college career with Maryland and his time in New York.
My bet is Hyndman has a list of guys he saw in his college days that he figures he could mold into the type of players he wants. Hall fits the bill for Hyndman as someone who can play multiple spots on the field. He can play up in the midfield on the offensive side or he can provide cover in the defense. In three years at Maryland, he appeared in 66 games, scoring 26 goals and assisting on 14. While I don't expect him do have those numbers here in Dallas I do see this as fairly wise move.
This is of course a move to help provide cover for John leaving (should it come down). Hall will provide cover in the back on the wings and allow Zach Loyd to shift into the middle. I'm not a huge fan of this but let's face it, for right now it may be the best move the club can make.
So what do you make of this deal? Like Hall? Hate to see Alexander go?
