FCD News Update 6/21

That's the way soccer go
That's the way soccer go

Tuesday means gameday for the FC Dallas reserves. Tonight they're traveling west to Midland to take on the West Texas United Sockers. This is the third year in a row that FC Dallas will head out there and I think this is a fantastic opportunity to get our reserves a competitive game(Sockers beat FCD last season) a week before playing in the US Open cup. The Odessa American has a game preview with this interesting tidbit.

"FC Dallas has been able to extend their brand," RockHounds general manager Monty Hoppel said. "One of the youth teams in the area, West Texas United, is already working on an agreement, I believe, to wear the FC Dallas colors and support their name. We think we can fit another niche."

Hoppel expects to meet with FC Dallas representatives later this summer to figure out exactly what kind of partnership the two teams can form.

Next I want to give some love to Soccer Today, a new soccer show on 103.3 ESPN radio with Bobby Rhine, Marc Stein of NBA fame and Luis Fernando Perez of 1540 ESPN Deportes. I'm shamefully just giving a listen to the podcast today for the first time but I urge all of you to check it out. They know how many people are listening to it online and it sends a real message to ESPN Dallas that there's many FC Dallas fans here in the metroplex by listening to the show.

Robert Casner has an FCD notebook up with a little bit on Andrew Jacobson

The more we see him, the more we like him," said FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman, who had particular praise for Jacobson’s first assist on the night. "That was a brilliant ball that he gave to Brek [Shea]. He does a lot of things people don’t see so we got quite a steal there but we know he has talent."

Some of the best players of the Gold Cup are looking to MLS and one of them is Rodolfo Zelaya, the attacking midfielder for El Salvador. Zelaya plays for Alianza, Dallas' CCL qualifying round opponent. FC Dallas has had reps at nearly every Gold Cup game and Zelaya is no doubt on their radar.

Afterward, the 22-year-old made no secret of his — and his teammates’ — desire to earn an opportunity in the league where his countrymen have been plying their trade since its inception in 1996.

"We all hope to get out of El Salvador," he said through an interpreter. "We all try to demonstrate on the field that we have the ability to get out of our country — that’s what all of us want, to come here and play in MLS."

FC Dallas became the third team in MLS history to win 200 games and is commemorating that by counting down the top 10 wins in team history. Here's numbers 10-8

We mentioned that FC Dallas will host their first Lamar Hunt US Open Cup game since 2008 a week from today and tonight Charleston takes on Orlando City for the right to play at PHP. Here's a preview of tonight's game with lots of great information. If you're a total degenerate, you can watch the game here

Richard Sanchez and the Mexico U17's are back in action tonight against Congo. The game is at 5:45 and can be seen at and likely Galavision.

And finally, the youth soccer world descends on Frisco, TX this weekend as the US Soccer Development Academy playoffs are here June 24-28. Both FC Dallas academy teams made the playoffs and the U18's are the #2 overall seed. Today US Soccer released the entire field and the schedule of matches.
