If you're like me, you've had the Champions League games circled on your sports calendar ever since FCD made MLS Cup and on Wednesday we will learn who Dallas will face in their first foray into international club competition since 1998.
Through a press release sent out today and the magic of Wikipedia, I've mapped out who FC Dallas could be drawn against on Wednesday.
Finishing as the last qualifier to the CCL, FC Dallas will enter in the preliminary round where they will face off against a team from Pot B in a home and home series played on July 26-28 and August 2-4.
In Pot B, there are eight different possibilities for Dallas.
Municipal (Guatemala)-The runners up of the last Guatemalan apertura and clausura championships, Municipal finished third in Group C of last year's edition in a tough group with Monterrey, Saprissa and Seattle Sounders. This would probably be the toughest draw Dallas could get.
San Francisco (Panama)- 2011 Clausura winners. Last year they got knocked out in the preliminary round by Cruz Azul of Mexico. Probably right in the middle of teams Dallas would want to get.
Alianza(El Salvador)- 2011 Clausura Champion of El Salvador, Alianza just won their first championship since 2004. Alianza has Cristian Castillo a player you might remember from DC United. This would be another tough draw for Dallas...El Salvadorian teams always seem to play tough.
Real Esteli or Walter Ferretti (Nicaragua) - These two play this week in a home and home series to decide who moves on. This would likely be a very easy draw as last year Real Esteli was kicked out of the tournament for failing CONCACAF stadium requirements.
Defence Force (Belize)EDIT: This spot has been given to Olimpia of Honduras due to DF's stadium not meeting CONCACAF standards. - Olimpia would be a pretty tough draw for FCD, but one they should beat.
Puerto Rican Islanders/Alpha United (Guyana)/Defence Force (Trinidad)/Tempete (Haiti)(Caribbean 1,2,3)-
Three of these four teams will qualify for the preliminary stage of the Champions League. We will know who they are on May 25 and 27. Yes, there is another Defence Force, that's not a typo and yes FC Dallas could potentially go to Guyana, a country on the continent of South America. I would really hate to play Puerto Rican Islanders though.
Just for information, the other teams in Pot A are Santos Laguna(Mexico), the loser between Pumas and Morelia, Seattle Sounders, Herediano(Costa Rica), Motagua(Honduras), Isidro Metapan(El Salvador) and the winner of the Canadian Championship final between Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps.
So there you have it, the teams FCD could face in the preliminary round of the Champions League....safe to say it would be a huge disappointment if Dallas fails to advance against any of these teams.
