The calendar is fixing to switch over to May and for FC Dallas, that means a rare 7-game month on the schedule. It's happened just twice in franchise history and not since the year 2000 has FC Dallas/Dallas Burn played seven MLS games in one calendar month.
The month of May is going to tell us a whole lot about this team as FCD faces five of the nine teams in the league that have gained at least nine points. David Ferreira may be back for the playoffs, but Dallas will need to gain points off some of the top teams in the league if they want to be around for those playoffs.
Jump for an in-depth look at the schedule facing FC Dallas for the next few weeksGame 1: FC Dallas vs LA Galaxy - 6PM Sunday, May 1 Pizza Hut Park
Right now, LA leads the league in points with 15, but they've also played at least two more games than most teams. However, with 8 points from 5 road games, Los Angeles is going to be a tough team to beat this weekend. Will the distraction of David Beckham and the royal wedding help FCD? Hopefully.
Game 2: FC Dallas at DC United - 630PM Saturday, May 7 RFK Stadium
DC just got punked in their own building by their biggest rivals, New York, 4-0. They are also victims of a heavy schedule as the game against FCD will be their 5th in 17 days. RFK hasn't really been a place that's troubled FCD with just 1 loss in their last 6 MLS games there. This is going to be one of those swing games which determines if May is a good or bad month for FCD.
Game 3: FC Dallas vs Toronto FC - 8PM Wednesday, May 11 Pizza Hut Park
Much like DC, Toronto will be playing their 6th game in 19 days as they head to PHP. The Nutrilite Canadian Championship begins tonight with Toronto traveling to Edmonton, though as they head to PHP they will have played two straight home games. I always like facing teams coming off home games as they're more likely to take the game lightly. This one is a must win for FCD who usually does well against Toronto at home.
Game 4: FC Dallas vs Philadelphia Union 730PM Saturday, May 14 Pizza Hut Park
Philadelphia Union are the surprise package so far this season sitting in second place in the East with 10 points from 5 games. They'll travel to Dallas playing their 3rd game in a week, like FCD as they host LA Galaxy on the Wednesday prior to their trip to Frisco. This could be a tough one for Dallas against a defensively well composed Philadelphia team in the return of Carlos Ruiz to Frisco. A Saturday night game should bring a fairly decent crowd, however, in another one of the swing games.
Game 5: FC Dallas vs Real Salt Lake 6PM Sunday, May 22 Pizza Hut Park
Ah yes, the much balleyhooed(at least around my house) FC Dallas game on my wedding day. RSL hasn't dropped a point this year in four games, but FCD is 9-0-0 all-time against RSL at home. Really hate that I have to miss this one, but there are more important things in life.
Game 6: FC Dallas at Seattle Sounders 9PM Wednesday, May 25 Qwest Field
I'm sorry but this one is already an L for me in the column. A midweek away game against a team playing their 3rd straight game at home in front of a raucous crowd? I just don't see Seattle letting this one slip away with games at RSL and Chicago upcoming afterward.
Game 7: FC Dallas at Houston Dynamo 730PM Saturday, May 28 Robertson Stadium
On paper, it seems unfair that FCD has to travel to Houston on Saturday after playing in Seattle on Wednesday, but the Dynamo will be in a very similar situation. Houston travels to LA to play the Galaxy on the same night that FCD takes on Seattle, so this one is being played on pretty even ground. For any game in Houston, winning is the only option.
So what will be an acceptable take from May? Do we just hope for FCD to tread water while Ferreira's out? I'm thinking 10 points from these 7 games would be an acceptable haul while 13 would be fantastic. Interesting times coming up for Dallas.
