We've been following the Mustangs all season here on the blog and today they clinched their first Conference USA Tournament championship since 2006 beating UAB 2-0 to cap a fantastic weekend for the #5 seeded Mustangs as they won 3 straight games to take home the tournament championship.

After a wild 4-3 win over Marshall in the quarterfinals, SMU defeated top seed South Carolina 1-0 in the semifinals before today's 2-0 win. The Ponies opening the scoring this afternoon in the 34th minute as junior Ben Hill flicked home a free kick from star senior Arthur Ivo to give SMU the advantage at halftime. In the second half, freshman Aaron Simmons headed home an Ivo corner kick in the 59th minute to double the lead and finishing the scoring.

Once again it was Arthur Ivo at the heart of everything of everything for SMU with both assists as well as hitting the post twice. This championship caps a fantastic career for Ivo at SMU and should propel the Mustangs into a seed for the NCAA tournament brackets which will be announced tomorrow afternoon. The Ponies will very likely host a second round NCAA Tournament game on Sunday at Westcott Field.

Today caps a great day for FC Dallas Academy players this season as sophomore goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra ended up shutting out both South Carolina and UAB in the semifinals and finals today with Damian Rosales featuring as a sub. They weren't the only players from the Academy to feature in conference tournament wins today as Boyd Okwuono started in UNC's 3-1 defeat of Boston College in the ACC Championship.

I've been preaching to you guys about Arthur Ivo(9 goals and 10 assists in 20 games this season) and this video shows some glimpses of what I've been talking about. Notice the quality service on all the set pieces and his composure on the ball. I'm just hoping he lasts until FCD's #10 pick in the 2012 MLS Superdraft.
