FC Dallas 2 Colorado Rapids 2

FC Dallas stumbled to a 2-2 draw against Colorado on a warm Saturday afternoon at Pizza Hut Park. Jeff Larentowicz, a thorn in Dallas' side over the years, opened the scoring on what looked like a deflected shot that fooled Dario Sala to put Colorado ahead early.

FC Dallas would respond brilliantly, however, as Milton Rodriguez pulled things level with a poachers goal after Atiba Harris hit the cross bar and David Ferreira added another line to his MLS MVP resume with a great goal before halftime to put FC Dallas ahead.

Unfortunately, FCD came out with a lackluster effort in the second half allowing Larentowicz to score his second of the game in the 51st minute to tie the game up. FCD had many chances but was unable to find a winner and the teams shared the points.

Game Observations

-Tough to make many observations on a game I wasn't able to see. Due to the ridiculous inability to record FSSW+ on Time Warner Cable(Does anyone else have this problem), I missed an FC Dallas game for the second time this season(the first being the Seattle home game on the night I proposed to my girlfriend). Don't even get me started on the game REPLAY being blacked out on the MLS online video package....pure insanity.

-Three games in a row with a goal or assist for Marvin Chavez. The speedy Honduran is playing his best FC Dallas soccer at the perfect time. Chavez is the secret weapon for FCD that teams haven't had to game plan for this season and his success is a key to playoff success. Schellas has some tough decisions to make once Brek gets back from Philadelphia.

More after the jump

-Schellas has a lot of decisions to make about who starts at the back heading into the playoffs. Assuming Daniel Hernandez is back before the end of the season, Hyndman must decide what his best combination of center backs is. There's questions about every combination which we will discuss later this week.

-The road to playoff seeding is much more clear. FCD most likely needs 4 points to gain the #2 seed in the west. Supporter's Shield is still possible as two FCD wins coupled with a Los Angeles loss to Colorado will see Dallas lift the trophy.

-Perhaps a game like this isn't the worst thing in the world. FC Dallas has always played better as the underdog and a draw like this will prevent them from getting over confident. In the playoffs, the home game is a must win especially if they play Salt Lake and they'll know a better effort is needed in a few weeks.

-FC Dallas now holds an MLS record 19 game unbeaten streak. It means nothing if FCD doesn't at least get past the first round of the playoffs, but you don't see the FC Dallas franchise name much in the all-time MLS record books so this is something to be praised.

-FC Dallas reserves defeated Colorado 2-0 on Sunday morning with goals from Luna and Leyva. Read the game story, the lineup for FCD is very interesting with Yeisley starting at center back and Wiedeman starting at outside back. Despite Colorado starting a strong lineup, both FCD goals game from homegrown players. The future is very bright for these two and these games are exactly what they need to build their confidence going into MLS matches. If they know they can get it done in reserve games against MLS players, they'll know they can get it done in the real thing. And Ugo played 90 minutes...hallelujah!

"Both our goals came from our Home Grown Players – Bryan Leyva, and then Ruben Luna in the second half," FC Dallas Head Coach Schellas Hyndman said. "This match was designed to get those types of players more games. We obviously need more matches like this.

Steve Hunt writes that Schellas Hyndman thinks FCD can play better(Duh)

"I think our midfield was average today. When you have that many players in the midfield and they’re not controlling a ball and moving the ball, it’s not going to be a good day for you," Hyndman said. "I think players need to pick it up some. If we want to get ourselves on a good run in the playoffs, we’ve got to do the things that we do well. I don’t think we did that tonight."

And Steve Hunt's gamer for the DMN

"I thought it was a very strange game," Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said. "I thought they outplayed us in the second half."

Even though the streak continues, several FCD starters were not happy with their performance against the Rapids (11-8-9, 42 points). "As a team, we came out a bit flat," midfielder Atiba Harris said. "It's not just one or two people. A bunch of us came out flat."

Peter Welpton's game grades for 3rd degree

As the 2nd half opened Colorado coach Gary Smith got his troops to do something that might, just might, give FCD fans a reason to sweat. Smith told his squad to give Dallas a spoonful of its own medicine, plus a kick to the shin.

Not a lot of media coverage on a day where TCU, SMU, Baylor, Texas Tech, A&M, and Arkansas played football in the metroplex and there was a little baseball game too.

FC Dallas finishes their home schedule at 8-1-6.....remarkable, truly remarkable.
