The club versus country debate has added yet another point to the club side. Earlier this season it was FC Dallas midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson skipping out on Jamaica's World Cup qualifiers in September. Now you can add goalkeeper Raul Fernandez skipping Peru's final two qualifiers.
MLSSoccer.com is reporting that Fernandez won't be joining La Blanquirroja for their final two World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Bolivia while serving a one-game suspension for yellow-card accumulation.
Peru is already eliminated from contention to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Fernandez told MLSSoccer that it was very important to stay in Frisco with his club instead.
I know some of you will be asking why he didn't play last weekend against Salt Lake. The answer finally came today as I was told he picked up a knock last week in training. Fernandez has resumed normal training this week and should be expected to start in goal for FC Dallas on Saturday when they host Brimstone Cup rivals, the Chicago Fire.
Fernandez and FC Dallas must win their final three games in the regular season, plus get some help elsewhere to reach the playoffs.
