Now that we've discussed what defenders to choose, it's time to look at the midfield. Midfielders will put up steady points week in and week out, so it's very important who you take here.
Players in the midfield can be worth up to $11 million. There is many more options at midfield than any other position. This makes the decision even harder.
Probably the best strategy is to choose one expensive guy who you know will have a big year. Then take guys who will be starters and get a decent amount of minutes every week. Here are five midfielders to think about taking.
Graham Zusi $11.0 - Zusi has scored over 200 points the last two seasons and I don't expect him to slow down. He will continue to produce with the guys he has around him. It is very rare to keep a championship team so intact like Sporting Kansas City has. He is currently selected by 22.8 percent of fantasy managers.
Fabian Castillo $7.0 - If Castillo continues the run of form he is in so far for preseason, we are going to see a big year from him in fantasy. With Oscar Pareja at the helm, Castillo will hopefully be putting up numbers greater than past years. At only $7.0 million, he is a bargain. He is currently selected by 2.1 percent of fantasy managers.
Diego Valeri $10.5 - This guy is the play maker in Portland. He tallied 11 goals and eight assists last season. I predict he does even better this year with even more minutes played. However, he might not be available for the first game due to injury. When he is healthy he can do wonders. He is currently selected by 15.2 percent of fantasy managers.
Steve Neumann $5.0 - Selected fourth overall in the MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution, Neumann is poised for a great season. He is not a starter. But, I expect him to get minutes and possibly break into a starting role. I suggest you pick him up while he is cheap. Neumann is my sleeper pick for the midfield. He is currently selected by 2.5 percent of fantasy managers.
Sam Cronin $6.5 - Cronin is only valued at $6.5 million, but outscores guys like Nigel Reo-Coker that are valued at $8.0 million. He is a good option to be the guy that you start every week. He will put up steady numbers. Not great numbers, but decent ones. He is currently selected by 19.3 percent of fantasy managers.
Others to consider: Javier Morales (RSL) $11.0, Darlington Nagbe (POR) $9.5, Jonny Steele (NYRB) $7.5, Diego Fagundez (NE) $8.0, Oriol Rosell (SKC) $7.0, Perry Kitchen (DCU) $6.5, Jonathon Osorio (TOR) $7.0.
