Time to make room for one more new player this month. FC Dallas announced Friday the signing of 22-year old Uruguayan forward David Texeira from FC Groningen of the Dutch Eredivisie.
Texeira will occupy the club's third and final Designated Player slot as a Young DP. For those keeping score at home, that now makes three Young DPs on FCD's roster (Mauro Diaz and Fabian Castillo being the others). The big reason behind him being a DP is due to whatever transfer fee FCD paid to get him. Still, a Young DP is a smaller cap hit than a senior one, so that is good. I would imagine this isn't the last move the club will make this preseason either.
"He's a striker who finishes, a striker who works extremely hard off the ball and is going to complement what we have already with Escobar, Diaz, Castillo and Blas (Perez)," said FC Dallas Technical Director Fernando Clavijo in the club's official release. "He's a guy we have followed for a long time. He was probably one of the best players in the 2011 U-20 World Cup in Colombia and from there he went to the Netherlands right away. He's a very talented young man and I don't believe he has even reached his potential yet. He's going to be an incredible addition to our roster."
Texeira has been with Eredevisie side FC Groningen since 2011, appearing in 65 matches and scoring 14 goals for the club. He spent the first three seasons of his career with Defensor Sporting in his home country, notching six goals in 22 appearances with the Primera Division club. The 22-year old also competed in the 2011 U-20 World Cup with the Uruguay U-20 National Team.
It also turns out that Texeira will find at least one familiar face already at FC Dallas in midfielder Mauro Diaz. The duo were teammates as teenagers in the River Plate youth system, this according to the club's press release.
We reported this rumor earlier in the week and I have to admit, I am very impressed to see this deal come together so quickly. Texeira will likely move right into the second depth spot on the striker position behind starter Blas Perez.
What do you all make of this signing? Happy to see it come together so quickly?
