FC Dallas had the best odds going into this morning's weighted lottery for midfielder Brian 'Cobi' Span, and came away winners.
The club announced Thursday morning that they won the lottery for Span, beating our four other clubs including Real Salt Lake, the Chicago Fire, the San Jose Earthquakes and the New England Revolution.
According to the 2013 MLS Player Rules and Regulations: "Players made available through lotteries include Generation adidas players signed after the MLS SuperDraft or draft eligible players to whom an MLS contract was offered but who failed to sign with the League prior to the Draft."
Span is a quality attacking midfielder that will provide some depth behind Mauro Diaz and players on the flanks. I would also imagine that he will come in fairly cheap, given what most previous lottery players have earned in MLS (we're talking anywhere between $60k-90k for total compensation).
Span spent the past two seasons with Swedish first-division side Djurgårdens IF, where he made 14 appearances and scored one goal. His contract was not renewed following the 2013 season.
It will be interesting to see how this addition changes the SuperDraft strategy for FC Dallas - something we'll dive into more today on this space.
